Anyone have any fun facts?

[personal profile] shortcrust 2019-02-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Over the weekend I visited the Mary Rose (Henry VIII's battle ship that was raised from the seafloor) and learned a very cool fact! The first cannons were made from bored out tree trunks, which had heated metal sheets hammered around them. Then, heated metal rings were placed around the length of the cannon which, when they cooled, would pull all the plates tighter together and reinforce the strength of the cannon along it's length - just like how barrels are made, hence why it's called the 'barrel of a gun'!

The Mary Rose is a wealth of knowledge. Such a great thing to go see or even just study in general. Glad you had a good time!

cw: spiders

I was watching an Attenborough doc. Learned huge tarantula like spiders live at the top of the himalayas and they can JUMP. Fun. For some I guess. Me if they, like, stay there.

Australia has some seriously freaky spiders;; Some harmful, some not- but like in the south, how you would shake a lounge chair to free it from black widows- you flush every toilet to make sure nothing creepy is hiding under the seat...;;

There are also these giant spiders in the Caribbean that just create giant webs above pathways. I remember visiting once, and not even noticing until the guide pointed them out;; They aren't harmful, and have no interest in humans, but they're the the size of your hand, build their webs just above head height. I'm not usually scared of spiders, but being so distracted by the foliage, I literally found out what it meant to be arachnophobic that day...;;

When I visited my relatives in Queensland and New South Wales last year from Scotland I was prepared to do all of that and then didn't see one spider inside the whole time. My cousin's house had spiders hanging in the veranda but I never really saw them moved so just sort of dealt with it. And she informed me they ate widows so it was better to have them.
I was like '................right. cool.'

That sounds....the stuff of nightmares yeah.

The rumor that spiders crawled in your mouth when you were asleep was created by someone testing how much people believed what they read on the internet. (it isn't true)
She made it in response to the idea that the beehive hairstyle was named that because an actual beehive was found in the hairstyle once... (also not true;;)

93% sure these are all true;;

Captain Kirk has never said "Beam 'me' up, Scotty."

Star Trek was forced out of it's primetime programming leading to it being canceled by fans of an even obscurer program. Whom sent letter after letter in order to regain its primetime spot...

Lilian Gish was one of the first to recognize films view on women by saying:
"You know, when I first went into the movies Lionel Barrymore played my grandfather. Later he played my father, and finally he played my husband. If he had lived, I'm sure I would have played his mother. That's the way it is in hollywood. The men get younger, and the women get older."

Also, Marlene Dietrich had never once said she wanted to be left alone personally. She didn't want the media to budge in on her day to day life, and they often used quotes from her movies to mock this fact.

That's an awesome exhibition, did you see the Victory too? Also great fact, I will tuck that one away for the day it inevitably comes up in a pub quiz!
