Horror Endings

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Are you in the 'ambiguous is better' camp, or the 'I want to see the monster' camp?

Brought on by me just finishing Bird Box and reminding myself that I am definitely in the 'I want to see the monster' camp, or at least, I want an explanation, camp. Not just some handwaving bullshit.

It depends, but usually, I wanna see the monster.

I can handle ambiguous, but I am so. Goddamned. Tired. Of the whole "grief/depression/family strife was the real monster all along" shit that the poor horror genre has been steeped in lately. I want things to be scary again!

Yeah. To me, stuff like that should be its own genre, and get out of my horror camp! And maybe that's why I found the Babadook boring/not-scary/didn't like it in general?

The Babadook, The VVitch, A Quiet Place, Hereditary, all that shit. Just fucking zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Please, please, something scare me again.

Suspiria was pretty good, but I still prefer the original on that one. I think if they're gonna remake Argento, something like Phenomena might fare a little better than Suspiria did.

IA. More schlock!

Come on. Schlock is even more boring.

Yeah. It's a cool trick to pull ONCE. When everybody does it, it becomes less and less of a neat twist.

I'm mostly in the 'ambiguous' camp, but I think little glimpses/hints can be great if done well.

I'm fine with ambiguity and mystery, but I want enough clues to be able to make a good guess about what's going on and what the resolution was. Not just total mystery.

I'm okay with that because some movies do do it well, but to me Bird Box was like.... The Happening but you couldn't look at anything.

There's no explanation as to what is causing the insanity, there's no explanation for why some people kill themselves vs others tricking/trying to get OTHER people to look and kill themselves.

Same here. I don't need to see every little last thing, but too much ambiguity feels like a cop out to me.

Hmm.

Generally, 'I want to see the monster'. Though, if it's terribly rendered or just goofy-looking, I'm okay with just seeing bits and pieces and the reactions of the actors to it - not quite ambiguous, but not a fully-formed visual, either. I think the TV movie IT would have been much stronger had the audience never seen the spider or the 'dead lights'. American Werewolf in London had that amazing transformation, but the actual walking 'wolf', well, they could have gone more reactions and teeth and fur shots and that probably would have been a little better.

Yeah, I think there are definitely some instances where I've thought "I wish they hadn't shown that." I love Night Of The Demon, but the big reveal of the demon really undermined the atmosphere on rewatches for me, since it looks like... well, like the monster from the old Chewits ads. Obviously monster effects weren't at their best in the 50's, but still.

Ambiguous is better. There's VERY few monsters where I thought they were more scary after the reveal. Mostly once the reveal happens I wind up just being bored because after that point it's always a Thing That Can Be Defeated rather than spooky unspeakable horror.

For me it's on a case-by-case basis, but I do think most horror movies show too much, and would've been scarier if they'd shown less. But that's not at all the same thing as saying I want a bunch of messy handwaving though. Not showing the monster works really well if the story is strong and cohesive and you don't need to see the monster to have a good sense of the story's ins and outs. But if the movie doesn't show you the monster because the plot is a mess and the only way to keep people engaged is by keeping them guessing, then that's probably going to really suck.
