'Would everyone be contrarian jerks if they had anonymity?' Well, going by the bit where most people on this comm are anon *and* are generally chill, reasonable people... no.
Maybe you're just a bit of a jerk?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This has historically not been true of the comm though

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, I would say it's historically true of the comm that most people are not contrary jerks just for the sake of it.

You could argue there are a lot of both, but it's definitely not 'significantly more jerks than nice'.... the jerks just get a lot more arguing going, whereas nice comments generally don't get heated discussions.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s fair - also though, since it’s anon, so there is no way of knowing how many people are making the shitty comments. It could be users who also are nice, are contrary jerks. I think that it’s enough of a phenomenon that it’s fair to say anonymity can bring out a mean petty side of people.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Imo there's lots of nice anons that leave positive or neutral replies to a thread. Then every so often a jerk anon that starts a long argument chain replying to multiple other anons and it's pretty clearly the one person replying to everyone arguing. So if there's a thread of 100 comments, 9 are nice replies, 1 is a nasty one, and the 90 other comments are various people arguing with the nasty one... lol

I'm sure the same person could be a jerk one day about something then nice another day about another thing, but I find the ratio of *people* looks consistently in favor of 'people who are being nice that day, or at least started off being nice'. The ratio of comments on the other hand can swing all kinds of ways

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's definitely true that people on this comm are willing to get into long and, uh, forthright arguments about stupid things with people who probably aren't arguing in good faith. And boy am I guilty of that. But it's not the same thing as being a jerk yourself.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it depends. I've been the anon everyone disagrees with a couple of times before and least one other person will back me up. It's easy to think only one person thinks differently from you when in reality, it's rarely the case.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. It's happened for me too.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think most people are chill, but we do have trolls. Especially recently.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people here are at least capable of being chill most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think if someone is being a jerk because they can, it's a problem, not an oh well everyone does it thing.

OTOH, sometimes people are quick to assume disagreement or coming from a very different viewpoint means troll. This might shut down important conversations and lock everyone further into rigid views. I won't share specifics because I don't want to start shit, but I've been accused of being a brat or troll for not holding the majority view or such.

These days, I don't waste my energy because it's not worth it. I don't need to impress or convince strangers that I'm a good person.

Group lockstep is an issue, nastiness anonymously is an issue...I'm not sure how much anonymous interaction between people without some good faith and good behavior can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 06:30 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, this. As the anon who started that stupid Daniel Craig mess yesterday, I started off with genuine opinions, but since every response back was just belittling "lol troll lol ugly!anon", I eventually gave up in even trying to respond to these people seriously. The irony in anons here flippantly disregarding unpopular opinions as trolling and then creating massive trolling as a result of doing this shit in the first place is amusing though, to say the least.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, your words did need some work if you didn't want to be considered a troll. Sometimes the tone makes the music.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't make excuses for the shitty behaviour and echo chamber here.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I get it. I will admit on here sometimes I’m meaner than I would be unanon - though also being nice and anon rarely gets a response on here :/

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not everyone would behave the same way if they weren't going to be held accountable for what they say. You hit the nail on the head when you said anonymity feeds your contrarian streak - the people who "turn into" asshole when they're anonymous always had those impulses, the anonymity just lets them act on them without fearing the repercussions.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Being contrarian isn't necessarily an asshole move though. I think a lot of people just go with the flow because it's easier to trust what other people say without looking into it for themselves. And let's be real, most of the commentary people make on the hot button issue of the day has maybe a hour of research behind it at best.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Let's be real, a lot of knee-jerk contrarianism has maybe an hour of research behind it at best too, right?

There's a neutral ground between agreeing automatically with the group consensus and being contrarian on purpose though - especially if it's to the point of not even knowing if you really stand for what you say. "I need more info before making a decision" is an option you can take without going "I disagree, just because I prefer to disagree."

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Disagreeing with the majority opinion isn't necessarily an asshole move. Being deliberately contrarian generally is, and is rarely any more well-researched than any other commentary.

There are circumstances where a dissenting voice is necessary, even if that dissent is being offered by someone who doesn't personally agree with the position. Anonymous internet arguments ain't one of 'em.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OP good that you admit being anonymous makes you a 'jerk' but to me that's the whole problem with the internet. People can act horrifically under the guise of anonymity. If you wouldn't speak to the person that way without anonymity, I'd reconsider whether it's worth doing it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
OP you are a bad person and should feel bad! Go jump in a kiddie pool where 5 toddlers just peed!!!!
Just kidding! I'm just being mean because I am anonymous!

Not a god damn thing wring with being a bit contrarian. Lets you see things from another PoV.

Ten, is that you?!
