I started watching this again in a fit of ill-advised nostalgia.

You guys, it is bad. So bad.

I just. Plot. Story structure. None of it stands up with anything at
all resembling a coherent narrative.

It’s a nightmare from beginning to end, and it would be charming except
it has no idea how bad it actually is, omfg, how did it even get made.

Bonus:
I keep trying to analyze characters and relationships using skills I
now have as an actual goddamn adult working in health care, and while
pre-teen me knew they were pretty fucked up, adult me is straight-up horrified.

Bonus bonus:
I still kind of love it. But I think that’s because of the inexplicably significant quantity of fic I saved that somehow manages to be good despite being based on this train wreck of a show.

Oh it's terrible, OP. But I will never not love it. Also, if you don't have the DVD set like me, and thus have never seen the English Dub outtakes, you are missing out on so much.

The outtakes are the BEST. FUCKING. THING. EVER. EVER. Seriously. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I was not aware of the outtakes and now I am off in search of them.

They are awesome. Bless that lady who voiced the girl in the first episode who realized that it did not deserve to be taken seriously and just cracked up at everything.

Nothing was better than watching these outtakes at fuck o'clock in the middle of an anime con with strangers.

someone... get me... some cheesy poofs...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
wait, which anime is this? it feels familiar - I want to say 'yu yu hakusho' but I'm not sure

Weiss Kreuz. :)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
literally thought the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. It is really, really bad.
And yet I would love a modernised adaptation.

I feel like a new version with some of the cheesiness turned down and animation that isn't complete garbage could work.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
God, do you remember that ONE FUCKING EPISODE with Botan in it where they spent the entire budget on the animation

it was literally the only decently animated episode in the entire fucking series and it was also the most boring one too rofl

Jesus, I never thought I'd see a Weiss Kreuz secret here!

I was obsessed with this thing when I was in my early teens. I even bought the vocal soundtracks and manga off eBay that are still rattling around somewhere. Like you, OP, I revisited it recently and, yeah. It's awful. Really awful. ...And I still have a soft spot for it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know a single person who likes Weiss Kreuz who actually thought it was GOOD. Everyone I know who enjoys it recognizes how awful it is and that's part of why they like it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

Knew it was awful, pure seiyuu-fanservice garbage when I first saw it as a college student, and loved it regardless. It's still a fond, comfort food type show for me now that I'm comfortably middle aged. It's terrible, but oh the eargasms!

I'm still sad that when they got the budget to do Gluhen the character designs had all changed due to not properly securing the rights to them like they should have during the first season.

I will also forever be hurt by Omi's fate. My sweet baby Omi following his father's footsteps instead and retaking his old name left me with the feeling of 'there are always worse fates for characters than death.' Teenage me was devastated-and even now admittedly in my 30's it still hurts.

That being said, yes, the writing is absolutely awful. The concept is so good, but they have such weird world building, taking a very realistic premise and adding supernatural elements to it. But man, the characters were fun and those original designs were just awesome.

If it were modernized (I don't think it'll ever happen sadly) I wonder what ships would come of it. I can totally see the ol' popular Youji/Omi ship being labeled problematic-actually since Omi is originally 17, I can see everyone insisting you can't ship him with his teammates or you're a pedo. Ships between Weiss and Schwarz members would probably be considered supporting abuse.

...I really miss the old days of fandom, when I used to be part of this one.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
One one hand, I hated Ken's old costume because it was just so hilariously unpractical but the new designs overall were pretty bad even in comparison.

And yeah, Omi's fate was just... grim and depressing.

I wonder about the ships. Personally, I was always on the wrong ship back in those days (although Weiß Side B, the manga continuation, gave me all the Ran/Ken my shipper heart could wish for - only just a tad too late for me to still be super invested in the fandom). The juggernauts were Yohji/Ran and Ken/Omi afair, and even Ken/Omi would be a pedo ship by today's anti standards. Nagi/Omi was fairly popular as well and I can see that working in today's anti climate, but they'd probably turn it into pure gay softboi uwu stuff. To be fair, Schuldig/Ran was pretty popular and tended to be pretty abusive even back then but eh, ykinmk.

Oh man Omi's fate in Gluhen is so fuckin dark (as is most of that show lol), but I actually did love his new character design. Nagi's and Ken's as well. I have a soft spot for Gluhen because of how watchable it is due to the animation budget and sticking to one plotline. I think I even made a secret on here about it.

I only EVER watched it as an adult, knowing it used to be a Thing back when I was a teenager. And... yeah. On the one hand, I absolutely understand how it was a Thing in the nineties.

On the other, the BEST that can be said about it is that it is insipidly cliché. Once I learned to roll with the "so bad that it's good", I really did enjoy it fine, and my inner fifteen year old probably helped.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Weiss Kreuz is one of these fandoms that will always have a place in my heart, because yeah, despite of how epically garbage the show was, the fans were so dedicated and creative and there was so much off-the-hook fic. And the characters are still fun to mine because they are so dysfunctional.

OH MAN I was just thinking about this anime the other day. I collected all the pictures of it I could when I was 14, but didn't have fast enough internet to download it. I managed to be highly obsessed with it despite never seeing it. I kind of wish I had back then, since everyone seems to agree these days that it was total trash.
