You guys, it is bad. So bad.
I just. Plot. Story structure. None of it stands up with anything at
all resembling a coherent narrative.
It’s a nightmare from beginning to end, and it would be charming except
it has no idea how bad it actually is, omfg, how did it even get made.
Bonus:
I keep trying to analyze characters and relationships using skills I
now have as an actual goddamn adult working in health care, and while
pre-teen me knew they were pretty fucked up, adult me is straight-up horrified.
Bonus bonus:
I still kind of love it. But I think that’s because of the inexplicably significant quantity of fic I saved that somehow manages to be good despite being based on this train wreck of a show.

I was obsessed with this thing when I was in my early teens. I even bought the vocal soundtracks and manga off eBay that are still rattling around somewhere. Like you, OP, I revisited it recently and, yeah. It's awful. Really awful. ...And I still have a soft spot for it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 05:22 am (UTC)(link)Knew it was awful, pure seiyuu-fanservice garbage when I first saw it as a college student, and loved it regardless. It's still a fond, comfort food type show for me now that I'm comfortably middle aged. It's terrible, but oh the eargasms!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 11:37 am (UTC)(link)I will also forever be hurt by Omi's fate. My sweet baby Omi following his father's footsteps instead and retaking his old name left me with the feeling of 'there are always worse fates for characters than death.' Teenage me was devastated-and even now admittedly in my 30's it still hurts.
That being said, yes, the writing is absolutely awful. The concept is so good, but they have such weird world building, taking a very realistic premise and adding supernatural elements to it. But man, the characters were fun and those original designs were just awesome.
If it were modernized (I don't think it'll ever happen sadly) I wonder what ships would come of it. I can totally see the ol' popular Youji/Omi ship being labeled problematic-actually since Omi is originally 17, I can see everyone insisting you can't ship him with his teammates or you're a pedo. Ships between Weiss and Schwarz members would probably be considered supporting abuse.
...I really miss the old days of fandom, when I used to be part of this one.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)And yeah, Omi's fate was just... grim and depressing.
I wonder about the ships. Personally, I was always on the wrong ship back in those days (although Weiß Side B, the manga continuation, gave me all the Ran/Ken my shipper heart could wish for - only just a tad too late for me to still be super invested in the fandom). The juggernauts were Yohji/Ran and Ken/Omi afair, and even Ken/Omi would be a pedo ship by today's anti standards. Nagi/Omi was fairly popular as well and I can see that working in today's anti climate, but they'd probably turn it into pure gay softboi uwu stuff. To be fair, Schuldig/Ran was pretty popular and tended to be pretty abusive even back then but eh, ykinmk.

On the other, the BEST that can be said about it is that it is insipidly cliché. Once I learned to roll with the "so bad that it's good", I really did enjoy it fine, and my inner fifteen year old probably helped.
