Why do people drink and drive? Seriously? I get that drinking lowers your inhabitions. But I would never go near my car after even one drink. And I just genuinely don't understand the mindset of people who would.

My sister was hit by a drunk driver a couple days ago. She's fine other than bruises, but her car is totaled. Drunk drivers are the worst.

They do it because they think THEY are the one person who can drink and not be impaired. Or, they just don't give a shit.

Avoiding drink driving requires a level of awareness and planning. Once you realize it, obviously, it's not that difficult and becomes second nature. But some people don't realize it or just don't care enough.

I assume it's a form of arrogance combined with denial. The people who do it think they're good to go, and they don't see the need to doubt their own judgment even though yeah, their judgment is impaired. Then you have the people who have a legit drinking problem and they're in denial about it... so therefore they're NOT that drunk because then it'd mean admitting they have a problem.

Glad your sister is all right.

They don't think they're drunk.
Especially when people get older, "I'm good enough to drive." becomes, "I know I used to be good enough to drive after this many drinks." It's mostly denial, and a disregard for reality.

It's the lowering of inhibitions itself which is the problem. They don't think they should leave their vehicles/they weren't planning to drink so much/planned to drive home anyway- it combines to a total where they then convince themselves it's all going to be fine, that it's a defeat if they don't drive home themselves...
My mother's a chronic alcoholic, who both relies and demeans my father (a social alcoholic) to never drive drunk, unless it's to bring the both of them home.
Despite making a point that I didn't get my license to drive their drunk asses around, I mostly act as their carpool with it. As much as I hate it, I keep doing it because I know they'll be driving anyways...
