I love that chin thing he does with Holden too, but for me it's more about Holden and how the show frames his character. There's something vaguely feminine about how Holden's character is treated by the narrative. Not that Holden the person is feminine, but the way he exists within the narrative veers a little towards territory that would usually be reserved for female characters. And this scene is definitely an example of that.

His vulnerability in this scene, and his awareness of his vulnerability, and his fear. Plus the previous scene he has with Debbie where she basically teaches him feminine flirtation/seduction techniques and he kind of takes them in and actually thinks about them, even though Debbie laughs it off. I just found it really riveting, after so many years of savvy, "man's man" detectives who are a lot more like his partner Bill.

Yesss to the whole vulnerability thing. I have never been into Groff before this, but whenever he's terrified and paralyzed with fear (hoooo boy that last scene where he fights off the hug) I'm just absolutely mesmerized.

That sounds really interesting. I love detective shows but am definitely bored with the man's man detectives as you describe them.
