hyper empathy isn't a special snowflake identity
it's a symptom of a few different mental disorders
i don't know what you're cringing about here

Can you tell me more about this topic

What are the chances that this teenager is diagnosed (by a real medical professional, not self diagnosed) with one of those disorders?

You can have a mental illness without having it diagnosed by a medical professional. And I say that as someone with a diagnosed mental illness. I get that it's annoying and bad when there are people playing the part of a mental illness. But the existence of mental illness is not dependent on whether a doctor has diagnosed it. And definitely, the existence of mental health symptoms is not dependent on a doctor's diagnosis.

You should definitely be careful and skeptical about assigning yourself any mental illness without a diagnosis, especially some very specific or rare diagnosis. And having a mental illness, whether it's diagnosed or not, doesn't justify being an ass. But I really think that this kind of gatekeeping sometimes does more harm than it does good. I think it really encourages a mindset of telling yourself that you don't "really" have a mental illness, that your problems don't "count", that you're not "mentally ill enough", and I think that attitude dissuades people from getting help that they need. And I don't think that - in this specific instance, at least based on this specific post - the user in question is actually doing anything wrong.

So, IDK. I get where this impulse comes from. But I think there are times when it's not that useful.

Pretty sure nobody actually said that, champ. Mental illnesses happen at all ages. But people are quite rightfully wary of people on tumblr who self-diagnose and dive into the whole shebang about being mentally ill without ever having seen a doctor.

I don't know if you've realised this yet, but symptoms come *before* a diagnosis

not after

dickhead

Uh huh. The problem is when people try to self diagnose and decipher their own symptoms when they have zero training.

But... the person is not doing that? as far as I can tell?
