Tumblr cringe

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even fully parse why but I had a massive backbutton reaction when I read this post.

https://milkteaviolette.tumblr.com/post/183276312115/hyper-empathy-is

For those who don't want to click:

Hyper-Empathy is:

* Crying about a book
* Crying about poetry
* Saying “ouch” when you bump into an object out of sympathy for it, because it can’t speak
* Apologizing to your plushie when you touch it in the eyes
* Crying about some random argument you overheard until your nose bleeds
* Physically cringing during comically awkward scenes in TV shows
* Not being able to watch anything with conflict without pauses and big body stims
* Having a meltdown if forced to do otherwise

Just... jfc, tumblr. It's like you've reached maximum special snowflakeness.

According to the blog this was written by a 16yo?

That explains a lot.

Also makes me feel grody "cringe"ing at it

Isn't that the age of most of the Tumblr users talking about some new snowflake identity? I would've been surprised if this *wasn't* a 16-year-old.

Then why do people on here take it so seriously like it's a crime or something, if it's just kids nonsense?

I'd've guessed 13 or 14 myself.

Mind you, I physically cringe at comically awkward scenes on telly and I'm... considerably older.

Oh, well that explains everything then.

hyper empathy isn't a special snowflake identity
it's a symptom of a few different mental disorders
i don't know what you're cringing about here

Can you tell me more about this topic

Re: Tumblr cringe

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
What are the chances that this teenager is diagnosed (by a real medical professional, not self diagnosed) with one of those disorders?

Re: Tumblr cringe

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
You can have a mental illness without having it diagnosed by a medical professional. And I say that as someone with a diagnosed mental illness. I get that it's annoying and bad when there are people playing the part of a mental illness. But the existence of mental illness is not dependent on whether a doctor has diagnosed it. And definitely, the existence of mental health symptoms is not dependent on a doctor's diagnosis.

You should definitely be careful and skeptical about assigning yourself any mental illness without a diagnosis, especially some very specific or rare diagnosis. And having a mental illness, whether it's diagnosed or not, doesn't justify being an ass. But I really think that this kind of gatekeeping sometimes does more harm than it does good. I think it really encourages a mindset of telling yourself that you don't "really" have a mental illness, that your problems don't "count", that you're not "mentally ill enough", and I think that attitude dissuades people from getting help that they need. And I don't think that - in this specific instance, at least based on this specific post - the user in question is actually doing anything wrong.

So, IDK. I get where this impulse comes from. But I think there are times when it's not that useful.

Why do people flip out so much over things random teens post on Tumblr? Jfc, I am so glad 95% of my teen drama bullshit was literally consigned to the trash with my notebooks full of random bog standard teen idiocy. It’s not like most of these kids are posting stuff specifically designed to piss adults off, and even if they were, that’s also a standard teen thing. Ignore it, or, I guess, become a “damn kids, get off my lawn,” stereotype to go with their rebellious teen stereotype.

Saying “ouch” when you bump into an object out of sympathy for it, because it can’t speak

I say "ouch" when I bump into objects even if it doesn't hurt because it's a reflex. My brain is like, "I know what to do here!" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is me about 7 times a day at work. "Are you okay!?" "Yep, completely fine, don't know why I even said that."

Re: Tumblr cringe

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I think a lot of people do this.

I believe a fair chunk of this person's list. I mean, I find it kind of obnoxious, but I do believe a good chunk of it. However, I do question that particular point. I'm kind of skeptical that anyone actually says "ouch!" out of empathy for the object they bumped into. It seems like the 'zebras' explanation for that knee-jerk reaction, whereas "It's a reflex we have when something could easily have hurt us, and very closely mimics events that caused us pain in the past," seems like the 'horses' explanation.

Well shit, I cry about books and poems that make me sad, say ouch when I accidentally bump into stuff or drop stuff, and apologize to my dolls when they fall over. Don't do the rest of the stuff though and does crying really lead to nose bleeds? I thought those happened when your nose was too dry or something.

Re: Tumblr cringe

I don't know about crying. I know stress can lead to nosebleeds. It's happened to me a couple of times (I mean literally two times; I'm not trying to play some kind of anxiety Olympics here). The thing is, I literally never get nosebleeds, which is why I feel safe in assuming that they were from stress, since each time it was during a period of extreme stress.
