I hate Hunger Games AUs and Handmaid's Tale AUs.
They creep me out so very, very much.

In a way, the Hunger Games ones are creepier? Like, the HT ones are very obviously just for weird dub-con/non-con fantasies, but what the hell is the point of the HG ones? "I want to see these teenagers I like battle to the death or maybe starve"? I don't get it, and I honestly don't want to, either.

"I want to poke at how these characters I like will deal with this setting" is pretty self-explanatory.

Yeah, like... It's clearly a resonant setting that people find interesting, or Hunger Games wouldn't have been popular in the 1st place.

Very, very few that I have seen actually spend *any* time on how these characters are dealing with this setting. They just skip straight to "Doomed romance! Get your doomed romance, over here! We've got all the toppings - murdered children! Voyeurism! Suicide!"

I think the only HG AUs I've seen that focus on 'how would Character A deal with the Games' were ones where the answer was 'behold the smoking crater that was once the Capital'.

To be fair, if I were to write self-indulgent Hunger Games fic (I read the books once, never saw the films, and never bothered with the fandom) it would probably be light on the romance and heavy on “behold the smoking crater that was once the Capitol.”

I do quite like those ones
There's a good Buffy one (that hasn't updated in about 3 years)

I do Battle Royale AUs all the time, which is pretty much the same thing as Hunger Games AUs but with stricter (and more brutal) rules, and a smaller space to work in. I like them because I like playing with characters at their absolute limits. Fear is an emotion I like to write with because it helps me work through a lot of my own, and I like to play with the intensity of other emotions that it brings out. It's really not creepy. It's not like I'm in it for the massacre itself, I'm in it for the way characters come together or split apart under duress.
