I just can't. Even leaving aside the fact that the whole show was building up to Ted/Mother only to have her die at the last minute, it just doesn't work. The whole show, and the last few seasons especially, made it abundantly clear why Ted and Robin didn't work. That ending would have worked earlier in the show's run. But it did not work anymore, and the showrunners sticking to an ending that made no sense anymore was dumb.

Yep. Their relationship was ill-fitting for both of them. I understand why people focus on the finale being totally unfair to Robin's character but it was shitty to force their relationship on Ted, too. When he finally lets go of Robin in season 9 it showed a lot of growth and maturity for his character. That was all undone. I don't even really care about Ted but the bad writing made me angry. It was just awful all around.

Oh, did they do the whole "I respect women now because I have a daughter" thing? /doesn't watch the show

Yes they did. Even though he'd already gone through that character change on screen for the past few seasons and was marrying Robin. All of a sudden in the final none of that character development existed anymore. Oh, and the breakup with Robin was all her fault. He didn't cheat on her. She worked too much and he couldn't handle it, so she told him it was okay for him to leave. And then at the end of the final, she indicates that she's now into the other guy, the guy who insisted that kids and family were the ideal goal for everyone and couldn't handle that she didn't want kids and yet couldn't stop stalking her and obsessing over her even after she was clear she wasn't into him.

Honestly, there were so many things wrong with that show final.

Weirdly, the terrible final hasn't soured me on the show. I just never watch the final when I rewatch, except for the scene where Ted and the Mother finally meet.

Well, that's your prerogative.

The thing is, I think that ending would have worked at some point in the series, however, by the time it actually occurred, Ted, Robin, Barney and all their dynamics had grown way beyond that. In order to make it work, they had to take back a bunch of character growth, ignore specifically expressed preferences and behaviors, and basically render the entire last season of episodes pointless.

Ha. Hello my old comment.

Idk maybe it's because I was just a casual watcher and not super into the show? I never had any serious expectations and after the forth season of so I honestly didn't care about the mother anymore... I did like her a lot, but I didn't get attached or anything.

For the record: I do understand why people hated it (for various reasons), I just personally didn't and I feel like if I said that, most fandom places would run me out of town or something.
