The thing is, I think that ending would have worked at some point in the series, however, by the time it actually occurred, Ted, Robin, Barney and all their dynamics had grown way beyond that. In order to make it work, they had to take back a bunch of character growth, ignore specifically expressed preferences and behaviors, and basically render the entire last season of episodes pointless.
