She's pretty and good and I liked her character but the Mal stuff sucked and the planned plot lines for her character were... yeesh

what were the planned plot lines for her character?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - I can't remember details but I'm p sure the plan was that in one ep she was going to be kidnapped and raped and... Eurgh.
greghousesgf: (Ewww!)

oh god

Gang raped by reavers so Mal can engage in hurt/comfort.

eurgh just no

Yeah, seriously. It's not the only reason I side eye Whedon's claims to be feminism, but that's one of them.

I rarely like rape story lines, but I think this one could've been really, really well done. I love the idea of Mal showing up to save her, and finding all her attackers dead because she turned their sexual violence into a weapon against them.

The part where Mal non-sexually shows his respect for her afterwards is also fine with me, though not the part that I find most remarkable about the proposed plotline.

That the character has to be gang raped for Mal to respect her is bad. Not good.

tw: rape

She was going to be taken by Revers, gang raped, Mal would show up and see her brutalized and all the Reavers already dead (due to some drug she would have taken?) and that convinces Mal to start treating her like a lady.

oh, fuck that

To me this speaks volumes about what Whedon's kinks are. I'm honestly amazed he has as many fans as he does.

silverr: Dax looking incredulous (DS9_tribble)

Amen to that.

I liked the idea of her character adn the world building behind it, but in execution...yeah, I agree with you. And the planned story arch for them that I read he had planned for a second season? So gross. So yeah.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her and her friendships with the other women and I thought that part at least was very positive.

Mal's treatment of her was gross and it's not okay just because he had feelings and he was jealous. And I hated that the writers went for a tragic ending for her character. When I knew that I was glad it was cancelled.

She was my favorite. I loved how she was so elegant and kind.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-01 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her okay. I was mostly annoyed by Kaylee - mostly because of her voice, which I know is irrational, but it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I really liked her, love the actress, liked having an almost 'outsider' pov from her. Despised the grossness of Mal around her, loved her and Kaylee both being sex-positive in different ways.

I'm glad Whedon, et al, didn't get to fuck her over like they planned.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her when I first watched Firefly. But I remember that I misheard a few lines, so I thought she and Kaylee were an item (or at least, that Kaylee had a massive crush on her). Was disappointed when that turned out not to be the case :\

(Anonymous) 2019-04-02 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I would've loved Kaylee/Inara!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-02 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think you mean the series would have been better without Mal. Imagine Zoe as the captain! She could have all the regretful Browncoat soldier earning a living and protecting people storylines, not been vile to Inara, and anything dumb Mal did to get them into plots could have been handed over to Jayne!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-02 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
You raise an excellent point.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-02 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, Mal was great. The only times he was insufferable were his interactions with Inara.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-02 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
firefly is a fucking mess, and the only reason i still own my dvds is so that when i want to rewatch it i won't be telling streaming services that there's still a demand for it. i say that as somebody who was waaaay into the fandom back in the day.

whedon's real talent is covering his shoddy storytelling with quippy dialogue. and while that can work for a few episodes it gets really obvious when he starts randomly grabbing for plot points. it's been a problem since buffy all the way up to marvel. firefly is hugely nostalgic for me but it also definitely benefits from the fact that it didn't keep going. if his continued plans for inara actually happened i doubt we would look back on it so fondly! i sure wouldn't. fuck that.
