Good news!

Goodness knows we could all use some of that

Whether thus counts as good depends on how you look at it, but a man went into a national park in South Africa intending to poach rhinos, and was killed by an elephant and his body eaten by lions:

I've seen this article floating around other places on the web and it's kinda bothersome how many people are delighting in it. A man lost his life in an incredibly gruesome way - he was a 'bad' person, but a person nonetheless. Dunno. There's an element of misanthropy behind the glee that's eerie.

Eh. I can't muster up any sympathy for a person who was planning to kill a bunch of innocent endangered animals for no reason other than to show off and/or make money. He got what he deserved.

This one doesn't bother me so much - because he actually was a poacher and because it is sort of poetic justice - but there was a Buzzfeed article going around recently about the WWF funding paramilitary groups and partnering with dictatorial regimes to torture, beat, and kill people, especially from indigenous groups, without any kind of due process or checks and balances. And people were reacting the exact same way. It was... real bad.

I kinda get this. Did he deserve what he got? Sure, but it's naive to act like poaching happens in a vacuum and this guy is just some lone actor. You don't see people coming down nearly as hard on the people willing to pay exorbitant prices to buy the products from poachers which causes poaching to be lucrative in the first place.

It's easy to delight in one poacher being killed - good on the animals for this one! That's fun for people to think about.

"So this means there's still a huge lucrative market for poaching existing at all, lucrative enough that desperate people risk their lives and die for it, and probably none of the buyers that create demand, or the whole system behind it, are going to get punished like this, and none of them care, and that's sad on a humanity level" isn't fun for people to think about.

Not that I'm particularly sympathetic to this one dead guy. But people are probably going over the top delight about it because it's one random score for the animals in a systemic battle we can't really see a way out of.

Yeah, agreed. Also, children lost a father. They don't know him as a poacher, you know?

Eh. To me, misanthropy is a more general dislike of human beings. What people are reacting to is pretty specific to this guy, because of his cruelty to animals and willingness to break laws for personal gain.

I don't think this counts as good news. Don't feel bad for him. But I don't ever call the death of a person good news. Well, Hitler's death was good news.

The bloke I was complaining about yesterday - the arsehole in my D&D group - is leaving soon! His partner's going to have a kid soon, so he's going to be too busy with that to ruin my Sundays! :D :D :D

I'm trying to do mine. Doing it with turbotax. This is actually the first year for me where I've worked the whole year and worked as an independent contractor. I got to a point in the taxes and it seemed to think I was the employer, not the contracted person. So I clearly messed up somewhere, and now I need to wait until they answer my question.

My hen with a broken beak, who I thought I’d have to put down, got a stay of execution from my vet, because beaks grow back. Which I knew, I just didn’t think she’d be able to eat long enough for it to happen. But she’s eating, so yay!

Hope you've got a nicer vet for her now, the one you talked about before sounded appalling.

Best wishes to your hen!

I had no idea a chicken could re-grow a beak. That's great that she ought to be okay!

Poor hen! That sounds painful :( Seconding "I had no idea beaks could regrow," that's amazing! Hope it's a speedy recovery. <3

My migraine appears to be disappating. Yay! Usually they end up lasting several days, so that this one has only lasted 1 is good. I woke up with it this morning. I've got such a busy week, and I was worried the headache was going to ruin work. I didn't get much done today, but I can live with a 1 day migraine.

Oh, ow. I'm sorry you suffer with them so much! I've only ever had one and it only lasted an afternoon but it was enough to have me in tears. I can't imagine enduring that for several days. :( Hugs for you.
