Whether thus counts as good depends on how you look at it, but a man went into a national park in South Africa intending to poach rhinos, and was killed by an elephant and his body eaten by lions:

I've seen this article floating around other places on the web and it's kinda bothersome how many people are delighting in it. A man lost his life in an incredibly gruesome way - he was a 'bad' person, but a person nonetheless. Dunno. There's an element of misanthropy behind the glee that's eerie.

Eh. I can't muster up any sympathy for a person who was planning to kill a bunch of innocent endangered animals for no reason other than to show off and/or make money. He got what he deserved.

He was likely a poor person trying to make money this way because they have no other job prospects...

I am assuming this is sarcasm?

This one doesn't bother me so much - because he actually was a poacher and because it is sort of poetic justice - but there was a Buzzfeed article going around recently about the WWF funding paramilitary groups and partnering with dictatorial regimes to torture, beat, and kill people, especially from indigenous groups, without any kind of due process or checks and balances. And people were reacting the exact same way. It was... real bad.

I kinda get this. Did he deserve what he got? Sure, but it's naive to act like poaching happens in a vacuum and this guy is just some lone actor. You don't see people coming down nearly as hard on the people willing to pay exorbitant prices to buy the products from poachers which causes poaching to be lucrative in the first place.

It's easy to delight in one poacher being killed - good on the animals for this one! That's fun for people to think about.

"So this means there's still a huge lucrative market for poaching existing at all, lucrative enough that desperate people risk their lives and die for it, and probably none of the buyers that create demand, or the whole system behind it, are going to get punished like this, and none of them care, and that's sad on a humanity level" isn't fun for people to think about.

Not that I'm particularly sympathetic to this one dead guy. But people are probably going over the top delight about it because it's one random score for the animals in a systemic battle we can't really see a way out of.

Yeah, agreed. Also, children lost a father. They don't know him as a poacher, you know?

Eh. To me, misanthropy is a more general dislike of human beings. What people are reacting to is pretty specific to this guy, because of his cruelty to animals and willingness to break laws for personal gain.

This. I see nothing wrong in smirking at poetic justice in a case like this. This guy went there to kill animals and the animals killed him instead. Seems pretty fitting to me.

I think there is a difference between seeing it as poetic justice and calling it good news, though.

I don't think this counts as good news. Don't feel bad for him. But I don't ever call the death of a person good news. Well, Hitler's death was good news.

Ehhhhhh you just ruined your own point. What exactly is the threshold of numbers murdered before someone's death becomes good news? Either bad people dying is good, or it's more shades of grey than that, you don't get to have it both ways.
