Because people lie, and it's always convenient to do so when the person they're accusing isn't alive to defend themselves. Of course I haven't watched the documentary, so my opinions pretty moot. I remember the case against him back when this all started though, and the parents pretty much admitted to forcing their kids to say these things because they wanted money and attention.

What are the advantages a person gets when they call themselves a rape victim?

In this case, I'm guessing sympathy and the satisfaction of destroying someone's legacy in death.

nayrt - Yeah, I'm sure that's a very satisfactory exchange for being pilloried in the media, having your whole life put under a harsh, victim-blaming magnifying glass and getting bunches of hate mail and death threats.

You'd be surprised at what people are willing to endure to get what they want, or when they don't give a fuck.

I admit though, I just may be saying this because I have the misfortune of being related to someone who just HAS! to TELL! EVERYONE! That they were MOLESTED! as a CHILD! because they enjoy the reactions and the attention it gets them. Not to say they're lying about their experience, but let's just say awareness and fighting sex abuse definitely isn't their goal.

God, this.

Not saying it's FACT that MJ did what they said he did. But logically, I think the benefit of the doubt ought to go to the alleged victims. No matter how people try to spin it, the kids and their families lost far more than they gained by coming forwards, and they almost certainly would've known a fair bit of what they'd have to deal with from the start.

You should watch the doc, then, just to see how wrecked James Safechuck seems to be just going over his memories and feelings about MJ (which are very conflicted)- it's hard to imagine going through so much stuff emotionaly just to destroy someone's legacy or some other intangible gain.

I watched all four hours of the documentary and the Oprah interview afterward.

I still find something dishonest about the whole thing.

I want to believe them. I really do. I understand that not believing them is a betrayal of child sex abuse victims. Even so, I can't, and I don't believe them. I don't trust their accounts. The tales are too carefully woven, with "textbook predator" details. I'm just getting this vibe of "using psychology as a weapon." Give me ten years, and I'm sure I could make up a story that casts MJ as a textbook predator. Weave in a few actual truths that have nothing to do with him being a molester, and then present it during a time that the sexual abuse awareness movement is big, and I could probably make it extremely convincing too.

Well, there's one anon here who doesn't believe the guys because they don't show the textbook tells and you, who don't believe them, because they do teh textbook version of everything. I'm sorry but it does seem like it's something that would be found faulty no matter what (I'm not saying it's not the correct response, but it certainly is the response from some people).
