As a fan, I relate to characters because of their personalities, not their genders. The character's gender doesn't even come into my decision as to who is my inspiration, or whom I admire. After all, I admire James Norrington and relate to Dick Grayson, but I do not relate to Barbara Gordon or Elizabeth Swann because I simply do not see myself in them. If I find a female character who I do see myself in, such as Luna Lovegood, then yes, I do relate to female characters.

ANYWAY. TL;DR. The gist of it is, gender doesn't have to come into it at ALL.

Ee, got more replies than I expected!
well, i relate to the male characters too, but i guess im just drawn to the females? though I guess it could just be in that simple, childish way. (then again I find both Luna AND Elizabeth relate-able, so i could just be really empathetic. is that the word?)

I'm just mainly noting the high trend I see in fandom for girls to generally be unable to relate to, or have a distaste for many female characters. how common it is probably just leaves me a bit bitter, haha. it seems like a lot of girls LET gender get in the way.
