101. i STILL don't understand the whole thing about not relating to female characters. As a girl, the FIRST characters I relate to are the girls!

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I can get it. But then I don't relate to ANY character. Even when I'm supposed to. None of them seem even remotely like me, and thank god for that, because I'd find watching myself to be excruciatingly boring.

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
haha, we're probably opposite that way then. I always end up putting myself in the character's shoes whether I want to or not!

I'm always the fly on the wall... even in first person narratives, which is pretty much wtf.

101 OP

Well, I simply don't relate to most girls to begin with. The company I enjoy the most and similar mindset is that of a guy, so in a sense I don't feel similar to most female characters because a bit I'm a girl that 'thinks' like a guy... but in most cases I don't want to relate with male characters either because I don't feel like a guy.

I don't know if you've seen/read Utena, but she was one of the few females I could relate to as a kid. Suikoden characters are just even better at emphasizing that.

well that's pretty understandable I guess! i suppose im just jaded by how little love girls get from girl fans.

i've seen a bit of utena, she was definitely cool! (that has no substance but i guess i dont have more to add haha)

Actually everyone hit the nail on the head essentially. I relate to both genders as much as I can, but I do feel that in certain aspects the females are 'enraptured' by romantic encounters. That is not to say that I don't believe in my share of love and relationships but I feel it is abundantly representative how women's emotions make them weaker instead of necessarily stronger. My best example can come from house where we see women that are in strong roles but they keep on being duped or shown as catty. Overall House turns them into sex-symbols for his own pleasure.

I also admire the women in these games because they play power roles. I've seen too many times where you'll see a woman in a role of power but somehow she becomes weakened and has the need to be saved, and they don't necessarily do this by being the strongest. After all, Lucretia isn't a powerful mage or fighter, in fact her one talent is having a sense of her surroundings and people. She is the tactician of the group. Chris is the leader of the knights but doesn't represent herself overtly masculine (which I've seen in powerful women where they try to cover up their feminine weaknesses by being nasty in a tsundere stereotype, etc) and she still has an elegance and is very diplomatic.

Also the two elderly women, one is a doctor, the other is also a retired tactician. I just like that these women have brains with common sense in them and aren't easily swayed by emotions. I mean the games have a broad casts with some stereotyped females, but I think they're also the first set of games where there is a substantial amount of well-rounded females.

I have trouble relating to female characters because of my specific gender identity.

[identity profile] zodiacstargazer.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
As a fan, I relate to characters because of their personalities, not their genders. The character's gender doesn't even come into my decision as to who is my inspiration, or whom I admire. After all, I admire James Norrington and relate to Dick Grayson, but I do not relate to Barbara Gordon or Elizabeth Swann because I simply do not see myself in them. If I find a female character who I do see myself in, such as Luna Lovegood, then yes, I do relate to female characters.

ANYWAY. TL;DR. The gist of it is, gender doesn't have to come into it at ALL.

talkin in circles

Ee, got more replies than I expected!
well, i relate to the male characters too, but i guess im just drawn to the females? though I guess it could just be in that simple, childish way. (then again I find both Luna AND Elizabeth relate-able, so i could just be really empathetic. is that the word?)

I'm just mainly noting the high trend I see in fandom for girls to generally be unable to relate to, or have a distaste for many female characters. how common it is probably just leaves me a bit bitter, haha. it seems like a lot of girls LET gender get in the way.

[identity profile] killerqueen42.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps what she's getting at (and I feel the exact same way) is how female characters tend to be written as women first, people second. And this cuts across the board of nearly every genre and medium. How many shows and stories are there where the guys can have interesting personality traits but the lone female character is frikkin defined by feminine traits, and those traits alone? Ok I need to stop this now because I could feel a big long ramble a-brewin' and I fail at brevity.

"If I find a female character who I do see myself in, such as Luna Lovegood, then yes, I do relate to female characters."
WORD!!!

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
ug, i do know what you mean there. I'm not the best at catching that sort of thing but it definitely bothers me too.

i dunno, sometimes i fear the opposite happens and people will EXPECT a character to be shallow or always see them as such just because they're a girl and they're used to girl characters being that way.
