Well, people got offended... Honestly, remembering those times I'm gonna laugh too, because people would do whatever they could back then. Hell, I remember just going with the idea I was a guy simply because it was too much effort to set things straight, and so many more when people did it on purpose just to get a rise.
So lol man.

what

We weren't talking about Amazon and Google, we were talking about Disney, so of course I didn't bring up something wholly unrelated to the conversation at hand? Of course Google and Amazon are equally bad news and we should be incredibly afraid of what's going on there too, especially as Bezos tries to weasel his way deeper and deeper into the nation's capitol, such as already owning the Washington Post?

Oh, you forgot Facebook, though! Since, you know, we need to talk about every single thing all at once

Man, it's like a reverse thing for me; I loved Wesley in the show (I was a nine year old girl who didn't know any better, okay), but I've really come to hate Wil Wheaton. It's a shame he turned out to be such a chode.

So... you say the actress for Anathema is not fitting because she doesn't look like she's described but you apparently have no issue with Shadow's actor? If anything, the actress is much closer to her role's description in the book. With Shadow, it's "let's cast this very obviously black man in a role that is described as POC but so ambiguous people never know where to place him, race-wise".

"(btw, with a name like Luthor he isn't exactly white...)"

?

Possible origins of the name "Luthor":
- Germanic portmanteau name meaning "people's army"
- English trade surname meaning "maker of stringed instruments"
- after the prominent (German) figure in the Protestant movement, Martin Luther
- after the prominent (African-American) figure in the race relations and civil rights movement

Apart from what the actor actually looks like, three of those four options are pasty as PVA glue.

Have I totally misunderstood what you're trying to say? Because im very confused right now.

And the funny thing about Harry Potter is that as soon as they racebend him, he's suddenly the most amazing character even though nothing about his actual character has changed.

Okay, but this thread is about fakers. Even if most of the people it applies to aren't trans, I don't think most cis girls claim to be trans guys on the internet because they're ~faking~

They're experimenting. I used to say I was bisexual because I thought I was. In hindsight it's clear as day that I'm asexual. But I was not ~faking~ when I said I was bi. I believed it. I think most of the girls saying they're guys believe it too.

It must depend on what platform you use to participate in fandom. On Tumblr, there are hundreds of posts calling out fandoms for doing exactly what you said they do to female and POC characters, but I never see the fandoms in question on Tumblr actually doing that. If anyone dares, everyone else leaps to the character's defense with the same excuse ("Women and POC get treated so badly; you wouldn't have a problem with her if she was a white man! You ain't slick!") At the same time, white male characters showing emotions just have "ugh, man pain, lol."

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how you go through life if you believe that and it does scare you. Are you okay?

But the military helping fund movies and providing both access, people, and equipment in return for positive portrayals has been part of Hollywood for literally decades? They're also involved in tv shows.

Captain Marvel being sponsored is not a new trend that only Disney has been open to. It's not even like the first MCU movie that had military involvement.

(Wings, released back in 1927 and backed by the Pentagon is considered one of the earliest big project.)

This has been an issue that has rightfully been discussed over the decades.

....wait what his NAME isn't white? What does that MEAN.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Most people in fandom only care when it's a movie they don't like. "This movie was funded by the military so it's bad" is a "gotcha" to people who liked the movie, not a real criticism of the fact that it happens.

Shadow is explicitly mixed-race in the book (last chapter, for those who missed it all the other times). Ricky Whittle is mixed-race. That's why no one has a problem with the casting. A mixed-race actor was cast to play a mixed-race character.

I don't have a problem with Anathema's casting either fwiw.

A young woman made a HUGE show on an internet message board about her online boyfriend dying. Like, complete with INTERNET TEARS over the top SOBBING. I already suspected she was full of shit from her past questionable behavior, but everyone was jumping into the thread making GFM-worthy offers to assist. Another individual and I spent the entire thread mocking the situation by play-acting our own crisis situation.

Then, three later, the young woman came back with an equally dramatic post about HOW ANGRY SHE WAS that her boyfriend had FAKED HIS ILLNESS AND IMMINENT DEATH. Sadly, everyone else still showed sympathy to her while huffing about the mean boyfriend.

A couple of folks made a comment about case doing these posts in advance (hence the weird dates) but other than that, haven't heard anything else.

Not really. It's not such a huge difference if the kiddies trying out new identities go ahead and attempt to lord their new try-out identities over everyone else in fandom and act like they're some kind of authority on issues pertaining to certain identities -in this case (cis)gay men- that they have absolutely no knowledge of or experience with.

I really have trouble liking characters with addictions. So yeah. That was why I struggled with Leverage. If he'd been any other race and still an alcoholic I would have felt the same.

Story above reminded me: there was this girl on an ATC trading site who faked herself being in a coma to scam people into drawing free ATCs for her. Went like this: one day, "someone logged into her account" wrote in the forum belonging to the site that they were her boyfriend and that she'd been in an accident and was now in a coma. "He" (still not sure if it was all herself or if she really roped someone else into doing it for her) said he wanted to see if people were willing to draw some angel-themed cards for her because she really liked angels and he wanted to collect many cards to hive to her when (or if) she woke from the coma. A lot of people fell for it and drew cards and sent it to him. However, I went to investigate and found out that she very much had not had any kind of accident, let alone was in a coma. But by that point, quite a few people had already been scammed. We banned her from the site then and there.

Misfire

Except "Hispanic" is not actually a race. Hence why there are white Hispanics, black Hispanics, etc. If someone is white Hispanic, then they're still white (and also Hispanic) but you can't say they're "not white".

Re: Do you believe in the supernatural?

As an agnostic atheist who grew up in a non-religious (well, both my parents were lapsed Catholics) household, I always assumed Jesus existed, but was probably just a cult leader with a small group of followers and Christianity grew around him after his death like he was a piece of grit in an oyster shell.

Except there’s really no way to prove he existed because two millennia of Christian attempts to find (and make) evidence that he was a real person have thoroughly muddied the waters and also, over 2,000 years, there are famous people we know existed because of historical records but don’t have any of their possessions, writings in their own hand, portraits painted from life, etc.
