Diverse casts done right

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind diverse means multiple characters of different backgrounds here, not lots of characters from a similar but under-represented background. So stuff like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians doesn't qualify.

Shadowhunters. The show isn't amazing but it is fun and has all manner of characters.

Overwatch and Apex Legends both have a very diverse cast of characters considering how sparse their lore is.

If video games count, I'll put in a vote for Suikoden 3. The Grasslands are pretty diverse. Plenty of folks, many from different tribes RIP Safir clan.

Suikoden in general was always light years ahead of every other game with diverse body types, all ages not just teenagers, and plenty of badass females who were still female and not just a man-warrior with boob armor. I've had friends who wanted to cosplay with me get super excited because they could be one of the matronly women with interesting-looking and comfy dresses, or one of the old fat shopkeepers, or one of the plain-looking people who are still valid characters with cool outfits while not being sexy cheesecake or meaty manly.

I mean hell I plan to cosplay Skald Egan when I go gray so...

YES. Plus you have three cool main characters to choose from and none of them are white men (or I guess you could make a case for Geddoe being white, but I'm pretty sure he and his group are meant to be that world's equivalent of Asian).

I never saw Asian in the 12th or any of the mercenaries...okay maybe Joker. But they're from all over the continent and some (like Queen) are from Harmonian-controlled territories. Geddoe I always saw as some kind of mutt - he's portrayed as more sallow in skintone than, say, the Zexens, so he's probably mixed-race in the sense that he has no idea where his ancestors came from. Wyatt, too, to an extent, which is why he passed for Karayan.

But, in general, you're so right. And Chris Lightfellow is a refreshing character overall even if I always mained Hugo.

Carole & Tuesday! Makes a lot of sense for a future city setting, but it's nice it's treated as normal.

How is that show so far? Was contemplating of giving it a try because it looked nice.

There's only a few episodes, but it's really cute so far. Definitely a show I look forward to watching.

It's not officially out yet in English because Netflix has it and won't be for another few months. So depending on your morals and tech-savvy-ness you might want to wait.

Alright, thanks a lot!

I think The Good Place is a good example because they invented a scenario where it feels organic rather than shoehorned in for woke points or to meet their BBC quota. Also, it pokes fun of all of them equally and in ways unrelated to their racial backgrounds. And it compensates for having white principals by making them the most despicable of all.
Literally the most evil person on the show is a white male LOL.

I died in the first season when Jason pointed out he was Filipino instead of Taiwanese like they assumed. "That's racist. Heaven is so racist!"

The Expanse
Sense8

Re: Diverse casts done right

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Both of these all I ever hear is "diversity! no straights here! lots of sex! soooo CLEVER and better than x/y show (where I like x and/or y show so thanks for putting me off what I now think is boring overly complicated woke crap with some sex scenes)

Lots of straight people in the Expanse. :-)

What put me off about Sense8 is that it was hailed as a show where no one is straight or monogamous.

I think Star Trek Discovery was doing kinda okay.

The Umbrella Academy

Grey's Anatomy can be hit or miss about a lot of things but I like that their characters have conflicts and personality traits that aren't solely about their cultural and sexual identities, but those things aren't polished over entirely and are still acknowledged.

If that makes sense.

Sense8.
Shadowhunters.
Brooklyn 99.
Overwatch.
The Good Place.
The Expanse.
ST: Discovery.

And a soap in my country, Eastenders, has gotten better and better on that front. But don't watch it if you like happy endings, all the characters suffer!

Dexter actually had a pretty diverse cast, especially among the police force.

I think Abby's isn't bad so far.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Killing Eve are both pretty good with diversity.
