I've never gone into the fandom, so I don't know much about what people are saying but what is so bad about Luther? He seems to be loyal to a fault, but other than that he's no more flawed than the other characters.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally don't think he's more flawed than the other characters, but I think people are reacting more strongly to Luther's perceived flaws than they are to everyone else's. For example, when I see people taking big issues with Luther's paternalism, I notice they're not taking Alison to task for her maternalism when it comes to Vanya and more specifically, Vanya's love life.

It's controversial, but I do think there are issues of race and gender coming into play here. Alison's actions are seen as sisterly concern. Never mind that she and Vanya don't have that kind of recent relationship closeness that would call for her to step in. Never mind that Vanya hasn't asked for help and has indeed, done the opposite. Never mind that Alison's throwing stones while living in a very large glass house. But fandom is very, very willing to drag Luther over the coals for trying to be Replacement Daddy. They're both wrong. But Luther is wrong...er?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure anon asked for Luther's faults, not Allison's.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT I read AYRT's comment as "fandom thinks he's trying too hard to be Replacement Daddy, and his sudden paternal concern is irritating."
My own interpretation of AYRT's comment is that fandom has daddy issues, specifically issues with men who feel the need to "protect" an adult woman who can very well take care of herself and in the process stifle her.

*eyeroll* If you're so very, very concerned about OP getting answers, you could respond, too. I mentioned one of the biggest flaws Luther has that fandom takes issue with - his paternalism.

I apologize for having the temerity to go off script in a fandom discussion.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that fandom is racist towards Luther? LOL.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He causes the apocalypse and still doesn't see anything wrong with his behaviour

He is a gigantic turdlord

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a weird take

we don't have enough time in the finale post- "oh shit it backfired, this is why she apocalypsed" to KNOW whether or not "he STILL doesn't see anything wrong" is true or not

or did another season come out that I missed?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Gee, I know I contributed pretty heavily to driving my sister insane and causing the apocalypse, but maybe we should stick to the well-worn path of being dicks to Vanya and leave her here to die?"

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if his pity stans don't come with flaming pitchforks as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, that happens.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I specially love when people claim some of the abuse he suffered doesn't count because it happened while he was an adult and 'could have gotten out'

Like

Are we also going to blame battered wives for not leaving their husbands or...?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
While I personally think Luther wouldn't leave as an adult is because of all the childhood abuse has conditioned him not to, I'm not 100% comfortable comparing battered wives here when a great part of the reason they don't leave is fear for their lives, which I can't imaging Luther has.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-08 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Luther feared for his life, either. I think he feared losing the closest thing to a father he had in his whole life, which is not an insignificant thing. Look up the Golden Child vs. Scapegoat dynamic in narcissistic parenting. The GC is usually emotionally crippled and dependent on the narc parent because the narc parent has raised them to crave their approval and not be independent. Conversely, the SG is also raised to hunger for parental approval and never receive it, but they're often forced to be more independent and self reliant because they have no other choice.

When it comes to battered wives, I think fear for their lives is one aspect of it, but not, IMO, the greatest one. I think it's very similar as above - they're quite often women in a vulnerable position in the first place, chosen because an abuser saw them as easy prey. Slowly, their outside resources are cut off until they have only the abuser. Maybe kids enter the picture, which means there's higher stakes. These women often believe they love the abuser because they've been brainwashed into thinking that the abuse is their own fault, and if they could just be prettier, smarter, quieter, a better housekeeper, etc. then their abuser would magically turn into a good person. That's why it can take a long time for a battered wife to leave.

Truthfully, all i can say is i'm bored to tears by the arguments about Luther, et al. They all sucked balls at one point, they all had shitty childhoods, they all have issues, the end.

I just want more Klaus/Dave dancing in a club in Vietnam.....

(Anonymous) 2019-05-09 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I feel about it. They all sucked. Even my favorites sucked, but I still enjoyed the show and didn't come out hating any of them.

More Kalus/David would be great, but I'd love more dancing in general just 'cause I loved that dance scene in the first episode.

YES! That was so fun. More dancing is good. :D

I don’t hate Luther, just find him dislikeable at moments although he also has moments I like. When someone brings up the Geneva Convention I can’t stop myself from rolling my eyes though.

I love Luther, he is great he loves Allison and I think all the Fandom hate is just such a waste of time and he gives Allison some depth tbh I find Allison so boring compared to her siblings

(Anonymous) 2019-05-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like Allison but I can imagine why she might come off as boring tbh, all of the interesting character development that she got (realizing that she built her entire life around rumors) happened before present day in the canon.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not surprised this place has Luther stans. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-09 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think I've seen more defending of Luther here than attacking :/
"Why are people so MEAN to Luther he was ABUSED and the others suck too and he didn't mean to drive Vanya insane!!!"
Got old real quick
