6. This has been explained several times, but here it is again, in OVERLY DETAILED FORMAT. :x

The original Japanese katakana for her name was エアリス, or "earisu." The INTENDED romanization of this name was "Aerith," since the name itself is derived from the word "Earth." HOWEVER, it was mistakenly changed to "Aeris" because... well, just because. Mistakes are like that.

The mistake was corrected in Kingdom Hearts, as was mentioned, and brought up online, etc. The proper name of "Aerith" is also included in the credits Advent Children, and while some people tend to disregard that movie along with the rest of the new Compilation additions, the fact remains that her intended name was Aerith all along, not Aeris, so please refrain from calling it BS or I will continue to ramble on and on and on again about stuff no one care about. :D Wow that sentence was retarded.

... And more mistakes like this occurred with Sierra/Shera and Bahamut Sin/Shin/Tremor. BUT I DIGRESS.

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
.. *in the credits OF Advent Children. Mwejhadlfksjf grammar.

[identity profile] song-of-truth.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
....Bahamut Tremor? *snicker* I must've missed that one, oh my.

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It was SUPPOSED TO BE "Bahamut Tremor." The Bahamut in Advent Children, I mean. But, you see, since it was called "Bahamut Shin," they changed it to "Bahamut Sin."

... Yes. I'm not a nerd, I swear.

[identity profile] song-of-truth.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think they need better names, regardless.

And being a nerd is PERFECTLY okay.

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
They're apparently named after fighter planes or something or other. I DON'T KNOW. This is why I need to learn Japanese-- not to be useful in society, but just so that I can figure out this kind of crap. Ahahahahaha.

Right-o. XD

THX TO BE CLEARING THAT UP, LINA. <3

Yeah, I was gonna say... wtf, it's not BS, nor is it trendy. (It also isn't a differential thing between KH and FFVII, either.) It was a mistranslation in the original game, and although I'm cool with people calling her either one, it's pretty dumb to say that the intended spelling of it is annoying. D: Do your homework before making complaints against people who are actually using a more accurate version of the name, plz. (I'm not even a big Aerith fan at all, but yeah, Lina's right-on with the background.)

On an added note, a similar mistranslation happened with Shera; her name was mistranslated as "Shera" when her actual name was supposed to be "Sierra," which is where the weird confusion over the name of Cid's new airship in AC comes from. I personally prefer to call her Shera, but Sierra is also fine by me. ::Shrug.:: Not a big fan of the Cid/Shera pairing, anyway. XD ...At least, I THINK that was a mistranslation. XD; I might be getting it wrong.

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
UR WELCOME. ♥

And yeah, you're right about the Shera/Sierra thing. It's because... AGAIN, the katakana: シェラ = Shera, シエラ = Shiera. Or, since that wasn't clear, "she-ra" and "shi-e-ra." The smaller "e" indicates.. some... thing. I'm not an expert on Japanese, so I don't know exactly how to explain it, but suffice it to say that since they only have a "shi" sound instead of a "si" (pronounced like "see") sound, things get confusing.

... AND YES. I WILL SHUT UP NOW, REALLY.

[identity profile] song-of-truth.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
The smaller "e" connects to the former character to modify the other's pronunciation, but the larger "e" stands as its own sound. Or at least that's what I've been taught... *beginning student*

Oh, katakana. You are too much geeky fun.

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that sort of thing. I knew that but was temporarily too retarded/lazy to explain it. :x THNXU. ♥

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that kind of thing. :x Thnx u for explaining what I could not. ♥

[identity profile] shahni.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I -still- pronounce "Tseng" as "S-e-ng" 'cause I'm so used to it. I'm TRYING to say it as Tson, but it's gonna take a while. *DIES*

[identity profile] x-of-greene-x.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Duuude, Tseng sounds nothing like Tson in Chinese.

Are we talking Mandarin?!

(Anonymous) 2007-03-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Really? My Taiwanese friend says it's a lot like Tson, I was basing it on what he said, 'n he speaks Mandarin. *dies* I don't know, don't ask me!

net'scrappingout>>"

[identity profile] x-of-greene-x.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I GUESS it sounds MORE like Tson in Chinese than in English but it's kind of a long stretch.

But I guess that's also like saying Cloud's real name is Crowd-oh.

XDDD LUCKILY, I DO KNOW HOW JAPANSESE PHONETICS WORK, and yeah, the little "e" following the "shi" in your first example basically makes the "i" in "shi" into "e," so yeah, you end up with "she-ra," whereas the other one is "shi-e-ra," and... yeah, basically, don't worry; I know katakana too. <3 8D YAY BAD TRANSLATIONS.

As a FUNNY side-story, I randomly ebayed this old EGM issue from 1997 whose cover story was a preview for FFVII before it actually came out, and like... it had this whole article where the English translators of FFVII were basically bragging about how it would have a "revolutionary translation" and how they were going to lengths to make it super-accurate, and.... XD XD XD GOT A GOOD LAUGH OUTTA THAT ONE.

...In other news, I should friend you already. XD; ::FRIENDS.::
hughes: (26;)

[personal profile] hughes 2007-03-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
...And OHCRAP at how many people responded to that. 8D S'OKAY, GUYS, I KNOWES. <3 Appreciate the gesture, anyway; you guys are sweet. <3

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
THEN IT WAS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ONLOOKERS, OF WHICH THERE SEEM TO BE MANY. CLEARLY WE ARE FASCINATING SPECIMENS WHICH MUST BE CROSSBRED WITH A GIANT TALKING CAT-LIKE THING, BECAUSE GENETICS WORK LIKE THAT, REALLY.

..... XDDD Are you fucking serious? But the.. the.. THIS GUY ARE SICK. D: OFF COURSE. DKSFJSALKFJLSDF Goddamn. At least the PC version was less mistake-ridden. I think. It was, right? D:

*friends back* Wheeee new friend~ and I think you already know what kind of insanity to expect so I won't bore you with that. :x

Not a big fan of the Cid/Shera pairing, anyway.

TEEHEE EMILY KNOWS WHY

I'm familiar with katakana as well, just so you know. I know that "su" can be romanized a few different ways.

But.. I don't know. There just seems to be so much drama with the different endings, and some people insist on calling her Aeris and some people insist on calling her Aerith that it just kind of made me mad.

But you told me some stuff I didn't know, so thanks. Er. I didn't know about the Shera/Bahamut thing.

I just wish people wouldn't say stuff like "it was changed for Kingdom Hearts." But I trust your explanation.. I think :x

Re: 6:

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Right-o. Just thought I'd be sure, seeing as how there's a 99.9999999% I don't know you at all.

It's a silly thing to argue about, really. I think both are acceptable and saying that one is OMFGMORERIGHT than another is just... really not worth time degenerating into wank over. Happens with other fandoms, too. I can understand getting mad about it, but... well, as long as it doesn't get out of control, right~?

You're welcome. |D ♥ And I'm not really sure many people DO know about that... madness, so yeah. XD;

Misinformation can't really be helped, I'm afraid. :/ And if you don't trust my explanation... I'll just stop right there so spare you from more of my rambling. XD

Re: 6:

(Anonymous) 2007-03-07 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
:D

Yeah, it wasn't really my intent to cause wank on it. I was just kind of confused. I've been known to switch back and forth with the s/th in conversation, depending on who I'm with. I do sort of wish they had stayed with one uniform name for her, though. Kind of.

Learn something new every day ♥ (And I do trust you. You're very knowledgeable on the matter.)

Re: 6:

[identity profile] subversive.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
|D

I don't think you started wank. Other people have, though, so eh. Humans. XD BUT YES. I tend to switch between the two too, really. WHATEVER GETS THE MESSAGE ACROSS. Mistakes like switching names around seem sorta unavoidable, though, so.. yes. I blame Square Enix. :x

Indeed~♥ (Y thnx u. I try. D:)
