IA, but after the whole Ego thing (which I didn't care for either), Gamora was kind of all that had as an emotional touchstone for Quill.

Man, I'm done with Star Lord for lots of reasons but this is not one of them. Hell, I didn't even like the ship in the slightest but god forbid someone lose control five seconds after finding out the person they loved was brutally murdered (especially when it's the same people who think Tony's response in CW was 100% justified).

Besides, what about Strange's (bizarre) statement that only ONE outcome was going to work anyway? Seems to me like it didn't matter what Peter did, that plan wasn't going to help them win because it wasn't The Only Way that Strange foresaw.

I don't like Quill's character either, ultimately the only character I like in the guardian cast is Nebula (yes, I don't like Gamora either, though I don't hate her...just don't feel anything for her), and yet I agree with you re: losing control briefly after finding out someone you loved was murdered by the person standing in front of you. No one's thinking rationally in that moment, he didn't weigh the entire world with brief revenge and go hmm, I'll really like to try this revenge thing right this moment.

With how many things that had to go JUST RIGHT for Thanos to succeed, only one successful outcome just makes no sense. I just don't see it. Maybe this was the best outcome, least amount of people dead or something idk--but ONLY success? Cannot compute.

Personally I just can't respect a character who loses control of their emotions at a time when doing so jeopardizes the fate of half of all living things. If it had been a situation where just one instant of reaction had lost them the advantage, I could get behind the "Quill was only being human" argument, but he didn't just slip for an instant. He kept going and going, even as his teammates begged him to stop.

It's not that I blame Quill for what Thanos did. I blame Thanos for that. But I can't respect Quill anymore, when he did something so unfathomably selfish.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry emotions aren't rational.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just made the same argument to a friend about how is it Tony's reaction in CW was right but Quill should have known better? And seeing how he reacted in GOTG2 to Ego's revelation about his mom this was totally in character.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, honestly, he could have gone half-god, couldn't he?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you done with him?
I've no opinion on Tony's reaction as I missed CW in the movies and haven't gotten around to watching it on my laptop.

It's like Terry Pratchett wrote - 1 in a 1000 000 chance is 100% guaranteed. In one of his books the characters intentionally sabotaged themself to lower their chances and get this 1:1000000.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt - it's partly that while I like immature asshole character types, I like them better as they develop into better people and Quill's development is just too slow and halting, and the other part is I just don't like Chris Pratt so it's hard to look past that sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt
Agreed on slow character development.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
People who assume they would have won if he hadn't lost his shit irritate the fuck out of me because it's such a prevalent view and it's really, really, really unlikely, even leaving out the whole "there's only one correct path" thing entirely.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
+1

And he's not the only one who could have done better, but nobody was being stupid, just emotionally compromised. Unless it was stupid for everyone to continue the line of questioning about Gamora while they had Thanos in a weak position.

I was annoyed they didn't just lop off his arm. Like - use one of Strange's portals, or a big sword or laser or whatever. Cut off his arm at the elbow or shoulder, have Strange or Tony zoom away with the gauntlet - there you go!

I hate when dumb writing has to substitute for proven solutions.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, there were so many other things they could have tried.

According to the Russos, the only one of the good guys to blame was Thor for not aiming for the head. So we got that angsting from Thor and none from Starlord.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's not how I remember it happened but good to know.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's not how writing works.

I feel like someone should tell Thor that Quill also messed up, because even in Quill's screw-up was arguably less serious, it was still a group effort that failed to stop Thanos.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
They also chose to dust Starlord though. He only came back for the big battle and then it was happy end. I'm not surprised he's immediately more concerned about Gamora.

He was gone for most of the movie...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty much done with Quill after he put his feelings ahead of half the universe in Infinity War, and I definitely would like to see the story deal with that - or at least acknowledge it. However, I can't really criticize his part in Endgame when he was barely even in Endgame.

Well, there wasn't a whole lot of time for much else.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Um, spoilers, I guess.

I mean, he maybe got 5 minutes actually undusted and onscreen and half of that was the posturing with Thor at the end. And really, what was he going to do when he ran into a not-dead Gamora.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-16 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Quill got dusted. The poor stupid bastard was dead for the majority of the movie, what the heck did you expect?
