According to the Russos, the only one of the good guys to blame was Thor for not aiming for the head. So we got that angsting from Thor and none from Starlord.

Oh I completely agree. I also don't actually agree that Thor was in any way to blame. I'm not sure he was aiming at any part of Thanos in particular so much as just generally aiming at Thanos. I'm just saying that's what the directors think.

NA - Yeah, that's largely how I feel about it. I do care about authorial intent, but I don't ascribe to the notion that a creator can simply state, extratextually, that something is canon, and that makes it so.

If the text is ambiguous, then the text is ambiguous.

I feel like someone should tell Thor that Quill also messed up, because even in Quill's screw-up was arguably less serious, it was still a group effort that failed to stop Thanos.

They also chose to dust Starlord though. He only came back for the big battle and then it was happy end. I'm not surprised he's immediately more concerned about Gamora.
