Same tho Thorin makes it all better for me, as well as Thranduil/Bard.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I never liked the way he played Bilbo tbh. It felt like his jerkishness kept seeping through.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?? So many of my friends loved it so much, but I wanted to be like... Bilbo isn't this much of a snide little jerk in the book! He's quippy, but he's incredibly kind and warm.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, his Bilbo was rubbish because he used many of the same physical and verbal quirks he had used as Watson in Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just Martin Freeman, lol. If you look across all his roles, it's all the same shit. He's got a really, really narrow range of acting.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm no fan of Martin Freeman as a person, but that's just blatantly untrue. Everett Ross (MCU), Phil Rask (StartUp), Lester Nyygard (Fargo), and John Watson (Sherlock) are all wildly different characters, to say nothing of the others he's played over the years.

Hell, my friend didn't even realize the guy playing Ross was the same guy he'd seen in Fargo and Sherlock, despite the fact that he'd seen several hours of him as each character.

If you've only ever seen him in, like, The Hobbit and Sherlock, then sure those characters are similar. But if you think Phil Rask is remotely similar to Arthur Dent, I don't even know what to say to that except what movies did you watch?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - With respect, I've seen him in Fargo and while he did a good job, he absolutely had some of the same acting tics that he had in other roles, just in an upper Midwest accent.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
This. Don't get me wrong, I think Freeman plays some roles really, really well, but I'm not seeing a lot of range across his more well known roles. They're all recognizably him.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, same, he definitely tainted it for me. I liked so many of the dwarves that I sat through all three of the movies, but I started out not liking his Bilbo and it just kept getting worse as they went on. I don't know if that's a function of my general distaste for Martin Freeman or if he honestly just played the role that badly, but it's definitely made it that I have no interest in ever rewatching them.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain why so many people dont like Martin Freeman? All I remember is people who shipped Johnlock sending death threats when their ship wasn't made canon but I know that post dates the LOTR series, yes?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
He has a long history of stuffing his foot in his mouth, basically. He's very insulting to people and just kind of... has this blinding aura of jerkiness and "I'm definitely better than you, and it's your fault if you get offended by the shit I say." Which, like... all right, that's certainly a take you're allowed to put out there, but it doesn't exactly endear you to people.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, nonny!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Np! I'm definitely one of the last people to nitpick about "problematic" stuff, but he's just one of those people who genuinely goes too far and you can tell he really believes it.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
He's said some genuinely cringy/problematic shit over the years. One that I recall is him making a comment that kind of conflated immigrants/refugees and terrorists:

"We've reached a state now where it's, 'You shouldn't notice. Why are you noticing he's got a bomb and has a beard and is Muslim and wants to kill your family?'"

In the context of the interview, I don't think he meant to imply that all immigrants and refugees are terrorists, but there's definitely that quality of "Some of them are, so we should be suspicious; political correctness is the problem."

And then there's the awful, awful rape joke he made when asked what type of Tolkien creature he'd most want to date:

"I've got a ladder. It's fine. And I’ve got drugs. I could just make them — you know. Slip them something in their goblet. Some will get offended by that now. Cause they’ll call it 'rape' or whatever. But, um, you know. For me, it's a helping hand. Maybe I should stop talking."

I think there's probably some other stuff, too, but these are the worst ones, to my recollection. I'll link an article that includes both the quotes I've referenced. It's not the original source of the quotes, though.

Oh wow yikes. Thanks for the explanation tho!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, how had I forgotten about that horrible rape joke? What a garbage human. I'm so glad his wife left him.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
IAC about Freeman being a jerks, but...

Some of them are, so we should be suspicious; political correctness is the problem."

This is just common sense. It's like you think national security should be scrapped on faith and goodwill in humanity.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
First of all, Freeman went in for some pretty aggressive stereotyping with his comment.

Secondly, I'd say there's a middle ground between suspicion and willful blindness, and it's that middle ground we should be aiming for. Statistically, one is not more likely to come to harm at the hands of a Muslim terrorist than they are to come to harm at the hands of a Westerner, so suspecting middle eastern immigrants of "having guns and wanting to kill your family" without actual cause is more likely motivated by xenophobia than common sense.

Thirdly, I question a person's priorities when they choose to talk about western society's problem of excessive political correctness, rather than western society's problem with racism and discrimination.

Also, I do find it interesting that people are fearful of the stereotypical Islamic terrorism, when there are more common forms of terrorism. In America, every other day there is a mass shooting. The vast majority of these are not to do with Islamic terrorism.
In England, from what I gather, there are a lot of stabbings.
Domestic violence around the world is incredibly high.
The fact is, most people have a far greater chance of being killed by someone they know than a stranger.
So yeah, be wary of your loved ones, I guess, because they're going to be the ones to end your life, more often than not.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-24 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
He was probably the least terrible thing in those movies. A like a kernel of corn in a massive pile of shit.
