I didn't even know they were making something ff7 related. As a die hard Vincent fan I'm all in. I saw VV first in Advent Child, which some people argued was unnesassary and secondary to the game. I love the movie, the fandom and the parts of the game I managed to clear. So I'm looking forward to it.

They're re-making the entire game, jsyk

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed, though. Vincent was very much in the background of FF7 (an optional character, even), with very few lines and basically only one unique sidequest; he didn't really have much personality in the game and they ended up more or less giving him half of Cloud's for Advent Children.

Alternatively, if they do keep it more in line with the rest of Compilation, you're also going to have to deal with Dirge of Cerberus-tier characterization and... lol.

ayrt. I watched ff7 game videos and I thin ff7 gave him enough characterisation. He's pretty consistant, speaking eather over dramatically or in "...", caring about the past and Lucrecia. A bit one domensional but good enough.
In Didge of Cerebrus I liked the footage and fan videos made from it, Reeve and Yuffie were also pretty cool, however the game didn't add much to the fandom in terms of fics.
The bit about half of Cloud's personality is an interesting thought. Cloud's a complex character so it might be true.

Nomura definitely has no concept of the characters' actual personalities or even the charm of the original worldbuilding. He only plays by Rule of Cool. No way will he recapture the magic of the original game.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, they're beyond flanderized at this point. i'm never going to stop being bitter about how dirty they did aerith. regardless on whether or not you liked her, she went from playful and self-assured and definitely capable of being a little jerk in her own right in the game to Actual Jesus and it's so fucking annoying. she was flawed! i loved her flaws!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Aeris seriously got slaughtered - Sephiroth did it once, Nomura did it again. :-/ The whole point of Aeris in the original was that she was so full of life. She was so alive, so funny, so mischievous. Not some distant angelic Madonna. Sure, she had her mysterious side, but she had so many human struggles and her own personal goals and dreams.

Cloud's changes also make me so sad. Like, I get you can justify his character change with post-war trauma, etc. But his whole character arc was coming to terms with who he was in the game. By the finale, he's smiling again. It's so moving that it's unsatisfying to see him not only backtrack, but get more distant than he ever was in the game.

But it's also the whole world that just feels changed. The original FF7 wasn't a scifi... it was a grungy 90's cyberpunk. Plus, I'm frustrated with how they've handled the Lifestream stuff in the spin-offs. The most spiritually beautiful parts of the game, and suddenly they have Zack's ghost stealing the spotlight in AC? Wtf.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it was ever confirmed by character designers or creators, but I feel like Tifa and Aeris' designs and personalities were meant to be subversive. Like they made Aeris look like the soft, innocent, shy waif of the two, when she's actually rather flirty, sly, outgoing, and sometimes even mean. Meanwhile, Tifa looks like she should be the confident and outgoing tomboy, but she's actually rather shy and demure in personality. And now they've fucked it all up by playing Aeris entirely straight :/

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for sure, I'm confident the Aeris/Tifa thing was intentional. Tifa's got her tough moments but at least around Cloud she tends to be a little shyer, almost meek. Whereas Aeris stomps right in like she don't give a fuck.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The original game was so silly and charming, I just know this remake is going to suck all the fun out of it. Aeris won't be cheeky or put Cloud in a dress, Cloud won't have playful banter with anyone or be anything like he was in the original, Barret probably won't get any attention at all and his side story will most likely be cut out, Tifa will be sexualized to the nth degree, Yuffie will be a prevalent character, ugh I'm just dreading it.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like they'll leave in the crossdressing, mostly because that is like... the One Thing that even the most casual of gamers remember as far as the silliness of FF7 goes. But they'll cut everything else. No damn-near-infinite stair climb in the ShinRa building, no Honeybee Inn, no Red XIII trying to pass as human by staggering on his back legs in a SOLDIER uniform with his tail sticking out and this actually working, no "bear wearing a marshmallow", none of it. It's going to take itself so goddamned seriously and the characters are all going to be their awful too-serious AC versions (sans the Turks, who will maybe be allowed to retain "comic relief" status, but they'll have any dangerousness totally stripped out of them to make up for it). Ugh.

And I swear to god if Genesis shows up at all I'm flying out to Japan to personally punch Nomura right in the scrotum.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but fuck Genesis and - I'm saying it - fuck any extra Zack. And anything about "living legacy" and Angeal and Vincent being Super Cool and not a cheesy 50's horror movie joke.

Is it weird that I found Red's line about how standing on two feet is hard to be really emotional? Something about the background music track (entitled "It's Hard to Stand on Two Feet" as I recall), it was just a really sweet and sad moment.

And I swear to fuck if they cut my Barret/Cloud romance...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
lbr they're going to cut out Barret as much as possible, to the point where Marlene will probably be presented like she's Tifa and Cloud's adopted daughter rather than his.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
If Genesis is in it, please give me a call, I'll book us two plane ticket so we can punch Nomura together.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yuffie will be a prevalent character, ugh I'm just dreading it.

hahahaha legit made me laugh.

Agreed on all your points except Tifa, because one tiny concession I will give the Compilation is that Tifa is actually less sexualized than she was in the original. One of the few things I liked about AC was Tifa's costume, to be honest.

Paying my respects now though to how funny and playful original Cloud and Aeris are. And also paying my respects to Barret who was more than just funny, but an actual developed character with real motivations and an emotional backstory.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they were doing Tifa right until the Dissidia games came out, and they made a point in advertising to say "we added Tifa jiggle physics! You can look at her jiggle whenever she moves!". That has me worried about what they're going to do to her in the remake. I think since the fanboy outrage at her design in AC, Square has tried their best to appease them since then (which fuck those fanboys, her AC outfit was cool).

KH3 broke my heart. I was so disappointed by 85% of the game. There were some good things about it, sure, but at the end of it all, KH3 was a total letdown. But for some reason I'm still hyped for the FF7 remake. I don't why. Maybe it's blind faith, IDK.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
KH3 is what killed any cautious optimism I had for 7R. :( It was just... so bad, and so rushed, and was missing such wide swathes of characterization and story that desperately needed to be there, and it really was just kind of the final nail in the Tetsuya Nomura is a Total Hack coffin for me.

I actually wish that Tabata had taken 7R on when it was offered to him. I know he didn't want that mantle, and that's 100% completely fair-- he doesn't want to be Replacement Nomura, and I totally get that. It's just an all-around sad situation.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay legit what did people expect out of KH3 to actually get this disappointed?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
A coherent story? Characterization arcs being fulfilled? An entire cast of characters that had been actually quite important to the storyline that had been inexplicably cut? Closure of any sort? Something satisfying?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because Square Enix games have had no soul for a long time. It's all visuals over story and characters. The remake is going to be very pretty but very dull.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Having replayed the old games recently

There's not really a difference, just OG fans not having played the games in years whining about how things have changed for a newer audience

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. The characters and plots have been tedious at best since a few games.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? There's is a notable difference in storytelling between the old Squaresoft games (FFVII) and the Square Enix games (from FFX). The older games are funnier and more cohesive in terms of plot, for one. The original FFVII had a diverse cast in terms of personality and demographics within the world. It had charm and optimism and fun banter.

Saying this as someone who has played all the FF games and is still a fan of newer ones, VII had charm to it that Square Enix seriously lacks on its games. Their direction is generally Rule of Cool and adhering to a very specific visual style that the original game didn't really represent.
