Although I found the story uninteresting, I still recall, 40 years later, my high school film teacher explaining that the things that Wells did in Kane changed moviemaking because no one had ever thought to do them before — stuff like high angle and low angle shots and actually showing the CEILINGS of rooms in the latter. Part of why the movie is considered great is because it expanded the toolkit.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)It's considered one of the best movies ever made for a reason. For several reasons, actually. You don't know better than people who literally analyze film as their job. It's fine if you didn't like it-- but your opinion isn't objective just because it's not the common one.

Of course, the metaphor sucks because sports training isn't the same as art innovation, but you get the idea.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-24 01:31 am (UTC)(link)I thought it was well done, even if the plot irritated me to no end.

I have no desire to see it again but I wouldn't go this far.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-24 06:19 am (UTC)(link)You're saying that there are other films out there that are far better than Citizen Kane and thus one who thinks CK is one of the 'best' just hasn't enough of a range of films to compare it to? How do you even begin to make this analysis? I do consider Citizen Kane one of the best films of all time. And I consider myself a film buff. A person can say Citizen Kane is 'one of the best' and has distinct parameters for saying so such as technical excellence, great peformances script writing etc and then say the same for a bunch of other films, for different reasons. I think Citizen Kane is one of the best films of all time. I also think 'Planes Trains and Automobiles' is one of the best films of all time. Yes, CK is seen as one of the greats, but there is a reason for it.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-24 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)The cinematography was impressive for its time, but other than that I found it pretty forgettable.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-24 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)On the other hand, that's not the movie's fault and it's actually on genuine "best movies" lists for a reason.
You can say that you don't like it. But saying "it's sooo overrated, not actually good" sounds a tiny bit pretentious and intentionally contrarian in a weirdly smug hipster way.
I mean, I get it. I personally can't watch Metropolis, for example, because I think it looks a bit silly from a modern POV and I have a hard time not finding those slightly too fast and jerky movements in old silent movies too involuntarily funny to take the movies seriously. But it's still a masterpiece of cinematography, especially for the time it came out.
