Personally, I'm really glad the Turner Diaries could be openly published. It's never been all that popular except among certain groups, obviously, but just the fact that it's accessible to everyone means that we pretty much know exactly what form fascist race war will take in the US among people who want that. Open publication means the playbook is open to the opposition as well, and so we know what to look for.

I agree that, if people are going to have these beliefs, they shouldn't be legally restrained from publishing them. I don't really think the benefit of foreknowledge outweighs the effect that these things have as propaganda, and I think you can publicize those extremist views in ways that don't serve as propaganda, but it's hard to justify legally banning things.

At the same time, I don't think it's morally right for people to have those beliefs. I think it's morally wrong to write or publish that book. I don't think the world is a better place because someone was willing to write and publish it. I don't think it's a good thing that people have those views in the first place that they need to be publicized. So in that sense, I don't think it has a place in the world at all. The world would be better off if it didn't exist.

Same. It's a deeply evil book but I'm glad I read it. It gave me insight into how people like that think, and I don't think I could have gotten that any other way.

So - given a hypothetical choice - you would rather that people evil enough to write and publish the book would exist so that you could read it and gain an understanding of their evil?

People that evil have always existed and always will. Making them all go away is not a realistic option that's on the table. Assuming that people like that exist, yes I would prefer to have their thoughts and ideas out in the open where it's easier to keep an eye on them. Also there's the issue of catharsis - it's very common for people to get their aggressions and bad, taboo thoughts out in their creative work instead of lashing out at real people. Repression is very dangerous, because the steam has to get out somehow.
