I'm reading The Dain Curse by Dashiell Hammett and one of the characters is named Aaronia. Aaronia Haldorn. What the hell kind of a name is Aaronia.

What are your favorite weird character names? Good or bad.

I dearly, dearly love him, but Prompto Argentum is the stupidest name of all time, LMAO

I mean, at least his name translates to Quicksilver if you squint a bit.

Gladiolus Amicitia (Sword Lily Friendship) and Ignis Scientia (Fire Knowledge) make me laugh a lot more.

(I do love all three boys though. But their names. Oh man, their names.)

Gladiolus Amicitia is the winner for the most ridiculous name in Final Fantasy for me.

It absolutely kills me that everyone has these grandiose-sounding Latin names and then there's the Amicitias. Flowers. That giant wall of meat is named after a flower.

Noct at least has a whole "night sky" theme going on, so I can give his name a pass.

Oh, and don't forget Ignis' middle name! Ignis Stupeo Scientia. Fire ASTONISHING Knowledge.

God, I'm actually giggling to myself in public here, I look like an idiot. I love these boys so much.

The weirdest name I can think of off the top of my head is 'Pinocchio' which sounds like a rare virus or something malicious. It's just always been such an odd sounding name to me. The word 'pinoccchio' itself is apparently Italian (Tuscan) for 'pine nut' which certainly makes sense in regards to the character in question being made from wood.

"pino" + "occhio"

"pine" + "eye"

An eye in a piece of wood is a knot. Pinocchio means pine knot.

Honestly, there are objectively worse names, but October Daye kills me every time. IDEK why this name, in particular, grates on me. But it does.

Oh, yes, that actually does always bother me.

TBF, she doesn't like her name either, so I think it's probably intended to be that annoying. Which if that's the case, job well done because yes, I agree.

I actually kind of love Wodehouse's character names.

I absolutely adore Wodehouse's character names!

Hahaha, they are definitely the best.

I messed around with Star Ocean 3 in my teens and my dad used to absolutely crack up at the character names whenever he saw me playing it. Fayt Leingod, Cliff Fittir, Adray Lasbard, Roger S Huxley, there were some great daft names.

God, JRPG names are the best. It's amazing what you can really let slide after you get used to it. Especially if there's one or two normally-named characters in there.

There was a girl named Cardigan in a book I read a few years back. Weird name, but I kinda liked it.

A lot of the characters will have fairly common names (like Alan, Monica, and Laura from General Hospital), but then a few will have really uncommon ones (like Jagger, Yank, and Blackie, also from General Hospital).

Santa Barbara was populated with the likes of Ted, Kelly, and Scott, but also Dash, Laken, and Flame.

Guiding Light had Matt, Beth, and Nick, but then there were Reva, Hart, and Meta.

Nobody can tell me that the manga Death Note has realistic names for its characters. Especially the ones that are supposed to be from English speaking countries. And don't get me started with the ridiculous nicknames they have...

Death Note has some of the most amazingly bad names for the non-Japanese members of the cast. Quillish Wammy is a great one though I think my favorite is Beyond Birthday from one of the novels.

Persona 1 had a character nicknamed 'Brown' because apparently he shit himself as a kid... What bothered me most is that he just goes by it willingly, and it's not even a translation thing...

I guess it's the feminine of Aaron?...

The character names in the Phoenix Wright games are something else, mostly in a good way or an I-cant't-believe-this-works way. I think they hit the top of the latter category with Apollo Justice. The title character, Klavier which is literally German for piano, where have you actually heard the name Trucy before yet it fits her so well and sounds almost normal, *Wocky Kitaki and Alita Tiala*?!?!?!

Alita Tiala is weird but her Japanese name was also an anagram so I get why they went in that direction. Wocky's name is at the bottom of things that annoy me about Wocky :P

On the topic of really weird names, have you played Spirit of Justice? It's like they looked at the Khura'inese characters and then just said, "fuck it." And I wouldn't mind some of them but the spelling makes it worse... case in point, Pees'lubn Ahndistan'dhin. At least the DLC case tried to come up with actual names.

I saw bit of an "Age of X-Man" thingie over at

scans_daily and there's a character named Tenia in it. I'm sorry, that's what we call a tapeworm in my native language.
