silverr: a character from The Devil Wears Prada with his hand over his mouth (_oops)

Ha ha, I was listening to some NPR podcast (Wait Wait, I think) and someone there made the same remark.

I don't feel bad for them at all, lol. They named their daughters after a fictional character in a violence porno show, where the fictional character in question tortured people to death since the first season. If they didn't already have the decency to second-guess, why would they now?

ia I don't feel any sympathy for them.

idr Dany torturing anyone to death in the first season (though I may just be misremembering), but she certainly spent the better part of the first 6 seasons Mad Queening her way across Slaver's Bay and beyond. I'm sure the big "reveal" needed better writing and more build-up (I haven't seen season 8 yet) but the constant foreshadowing for her eventual snap is about as subtle as a tornado siren.

She burned that witch to death in s1 iirc. She was constantly burning people to death, when she wasn't crucifying them or whatever. She was always pro-torture in the name of "justice".

+1
Like there is no situation where naming your kid that would end up well.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a teaser running on Adult Swim commiserating and suggesting they all rename themselves to Karen. I loled.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel bad for the kids... not the parents so much

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my friends growing up named her first daughter Katrina, and she started kindergarten right after Hurricane Katrina. Not quite the same, but I still felt bad.

I still love her and am going to pretend the ending didn't happen. I'd never used the name for a baby, not that I'm having a baby ever. But I'd still totally use it for a cat.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
My aunt and uncle have a cat named Khaleesi. They didn't name her, but they say it fits her. It's a really cute name for a cat!

I think it works pretty well. It is pretty high on my list of future cat names. Yes, I have a list.

I feel no sympathy and even if season 8 happened differently it still would have been weird as fuck.

Yup. If you want to name your kids for a character, at least make it a name that is fairly normal. You want something to give a weird name to, get a pet. Kids just look for reasons to tease other kids, and you are an asshole and bad parent if you put your own amusement above your kid's well-being.

That's why if you want to give your kid a fandom-like name, put it as the middle name. Then they can use it if they want to or ignore it if they hate it.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fandom fantasy names aren't really a good idea whether the character is good or evil.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Khaleesi and Daenerys are dumb names for real life kids. Name them Dany, it's cute and sounds good.

They probably didn't anticipate it... but they really should have.

I mean, sure the WAY it went down, the suddenness of the shift, sure, that's just bad writing.

But the "She turned evil and killed everyone and needed to be put down" twist was not, at any point, hidden or subtle.

Maybe you were rooting for her because you thought this was gonna turn into evil vs evil, but it was never going to happen that she would be the sweet innocent flower wearing ruler.

Her's was always going to be a bloody messy rule, and was never going to last.

I still think it's a pretty name. And though I don't condone all her actions, I found her an interesting and likable character. I'd be proud to have that name. I wouldn't necessarily name a baby that, but it's fine.

Honestly, picking baby names or getting tattoos or any of that stuff until you know what that ENTIRE related canon is going to mean to you seems pretty stupid to me. I hope these kids have a decent middle name they can use, lol.

*shrug* I don't see what the big deal is. It's no dumber than people who named their kids Anakin or Sephiroth. Even if they'd picked a normal name, there's always going to be someone in the world with that name who's a little fucked up. (And it's not like Khaleesi is limited to the dragon queen, though I guess she is the most well-known at this point.)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I remember I met a tiny silver pitbull puppy named Khaleesi. I wonder how that dog is now.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I find it funny that people assume the parents are all horrified about it. It's still only make believe.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Stephen Colbert did a bit about waiting until a character's arc was complete before naming your kid after them. "Just ask my sons, Saruman and Chancellor Palpatine!"

I find it odd how people here seem to assume that the parents are going to regret their name choice because the character whose name they used turned evil (or something. I don't do Game of Thrones). Reasons they very well might not regret it:
1. Khaleesi could still very easily keep being their favourite character; not all people judge fictional characters' awesomeness on the good vs evil scale. For example, the Joker is made of awesome despite being hella evil. I know, I know, he is evil from the get-go and that's different, but I'm perfectly fine with characters who start out good but turn bad, too. Just can't think of an example right now, 'cause it's usually the other way around...
2. Keeping on liking a character's "before they were ruined" version is also a valid choice. For example, I still like Drizzt Do'Urden from the early books and would happily name a cat after him, despite how shit he got in the later books. I still call him a favourite character.
3. They might have seen the foreshadowing (that I assume to have been there) and made the choice knowingly.
4. Khaleesi might end up with a different fate in the unfinished book series. If they're gonna name their now born child after her, they can't exactly wait until the next book comes out to find out. They're simply gonna have to chance it.

Now, I actually don't condone naming a child after a fictional character with an outrageously exotic name. That's the ticket to being hella bullied in school and everyone always getting their name wrong. Nah, parents should keep the fantasy names for the second or third names that nobody has to know unless the kid wants to tell. Or, you know, just name their cat after Raistlin Majere instead of naming their kid after him.
