You're doing life right.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They are, but other people aren't doing it wrong, either.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but this is an amusingly defensive sounding comment, even if you didn't mean it to be.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I freely admit that it's defensive tbh. I think that a lot of people think that being critical of movies (or whatever other kind of entertainment) means you're doing something wrong.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And do you think that's something ayrt was doing, by giving OP a supportive compliment?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They might have been, or they might not have been.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. And you're delivering a lecture just in case? That seems like a really unpleasant way to approach discussions. Is there something wrong with waiting to see if people are actually guilty of doing the thing that annoys you, before you react like they're doing the thing that annoys you?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What lecture?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"They are, but other people aren't doing it wrong, either."

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Shortest lecture ever

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortune cookie lecture. It even works if you tack “in bed” at the end.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way, tbh.

1. You're doing it right

2. "I liked it" =/= "it's good". Fifty Shades is, objectively, a sad, sad piece of literature. That didn't stop a lot of people from liking it.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It is really, really baffling how many people don't get #2.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoyment is a value, though. It isn't the only value of a movie, but it is one. A fun movie is better than one that isn't fun, all other things being equal. And there is a lot more subjectivity, I think, than some people are willing to admit. There is a certain level of objectivity, but it is a small range. Most things about movie quality are subjective.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
I like to think of it as a venn diagram (in reference to all kinds of media, but lbh mainly films) with one "Good" circle and one "Enjoyable", which so have an overlap but a slight one. It's a nice shorthand when coming out of the cinema!

(Anonymous) 2019-06-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
#2, oof, that was me and End Game

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that. I love the movie theatre experience as well. But the ridiculous ticket prices are basically what made me a movie snob. I love going to the cinema and would do so much more often, and for movies I'd not be totally invested in seeing if it wasn't so damn expensive. But since it is, I'm only ever going to watch movies I'm 100% interested in. Which is not much. Makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I can't really afford to go to movies as often as I'd like.

i feel this. there has so very rarely ever been a time where i left a movie-viewing experience and wish i had spent my time elsewhere, even if i didn't really like the movie and will never think about it again! i just really enjoy the whole time spent with soundtracks and cinematography and being immersed into a story.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so with you on that one OP ! I accept that a piece of media can be criticized on some aspects (acting, storytelling, producing ...), and it can be great, but I hate how virulent some people get about their negative criticism. There's a way to make them that doesn't involve acting like the piece of media is "The worst thing EVER !" nor being shitty and/or condescending to people that simply state that they had fun watching it. For instance, no "Captain Marvel" isn't going to win any awards and it's probably not the best Marvel movie either (but I maintain it was a good movie, for what it was aiming for) so I don't need a lengthy analysis to explain why you (generic "you") think it's trash and I'm stupid for enjoying it. The cinematic experience also has a definite impact.

Me too OP. I don't know how many movies I've seen that I've loved, but almost everyone else seems to hate.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same, the immersion of the dark room really helps me when I feel stressed.
