157. Dude, as someone who wants to get into the gaming industry myself, I can't even begin to tell you how absolutely incorrect you are.

The United States invented videogames, and there's a lot more to American games than Halo and other shooting games. There's gorgeous, evocative puzzle games like Myst; quirky adventure games like Grim Fandango (a sadly dying art) and even RPGs. And not just average RPGs, either; there are games like Planescape: Torment, one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

If you don't like what the US games industry is currently doing, go and change it. Go ahead and make a Japanese-style RPG, but for an American audience. I think that the US market would eat it right up, especially if you addressed some of the big complaints people have about Jap. RPGs (linear storylines, random encounters, etc)

And that's not even getting into international games. Farenheight (Indigo Prophecy) was an incredible game created by a French company; I hear the Germans actually have some pretty interesting games as well...

And before you dismiss all shooters as being stupid and bad, check out Half Life 2, Bioshock (and the inspiration behind Bioshock, System Shock 2) and Portal. Portal isn't even a shooter game; it's a first person puzzle game, and from a design perspective it is a literally perfect game. It is flawless in every regard, and this is coming from someone who is generally very critical of games, even ones I adore. Bioshock, while far from perfect, is a triumph of atmosphere and storytelling.

Seriously. Get out of your little box of jRPGs and go play some US games. you might be surprised at what you find.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In fact? I'd go so far as to say that the Japanese market sucks right now. Most games that come out of Japan are horribly repetitive, just repeating the same goddamn theme over and over again without an ounce of innovation. Square? Just releases Final Fantasy games over and over. And they aren't even pretending to make new plots now, they're just re-releasing old FFs. Nintendo? "MOAR MARIO. MOAR ZELDA. THE SAME CRAP OVER AND OVER OMG YAY"
About the only person who's done anything different is Kojima, and his games make so little sense as to hardly matter.
*waits for the flames*

(disclaimer: I'm a huge square fangirl, actually. Huge. I just have no respect for them either. I'm not bitter at their inability to release special editions in the US. not at all...)

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking THANK YOU!

[identity profile] haruhiism.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Truefax.

While I enjoy my FF, Tales, and Zelda, I know they are far FAR from innovative. Even PW, which I ADORE, has taken on that same repetitiveness. I'm not sure if this is a cultural thing or what, but the US gaming industry seems to focus on innovation while the Japanese gaming industry seems to focus on models. That certainly doesn't described all, since I've seen repetitive US games and innovative Japanese ones (ICO, anyone?), but that's a general trend I've seen.

I'm becoming more and more interested in the US gaming industry by the day, and I think it will only get better.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely agreed. Hell, even ICO has repeated formula somewhat (Shadow of the Colossus) but that's not quite as egregious as some of the others. The Japanese seem to find something that works, and then beat it to death with a stick.

Granted, American games can be as guilty of this (Halo and its clones. Just... Halo and its clones. And every damn sports game ever made. And anything Lucas Arts does) but you're right: The general trend is that American games tend to innovate, while Japanese games repeat.

[identity profile] haruhiism.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
True, true. Though, I would argue Shadow of the Colossus at least has a different enough formula to make it interesting. They definitely do beat things to death. I am so lamenting KH starting to become a franchise, while the response to TWEWY is basically, "...Ok, we're SO not doing that again."

...Well, I like to pretend sports game don't exist. Pardon the oversight.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The sad bit about KH is that when the first game came out, it WAS new and innovative and unique. Then they did Chain of Memories, which was ALSO new and innovative and unique, except they went "Wait that was DIFFERENT. Different sucks let's go back to formula!" with KHII which... was not really so good >>; (and this is coming from a rabid KH fanatic)

TWEWY's response frankly baffles me. The game sold very well, it's quite popular, it has a strong fanbase, so... what the fuck, Square?

Haha, same about sports games >>;

Drive-by Torment love!

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
afjldksjfdjdlfkdsjl *hugs*

It took me forever to play it becuase the first few dungeons are admittedly a bit slow but dear god you get going in that game and holy fucking shit.

I want a remake. Screw you jRPG fans and your cries for OMG FFVII ON TEH PS3?!

Give me Torment for modern PCs. Or another game set in Planescape. Just... more planescape. I don't even care if it uses 4e rules (... hell, 4e would translate pretty well to a vidjagaem)
... I'M DONE. afjdlkjfd TORMENT.

My bet's OP isn't any better than the people they're complaining about. So absolutely obsessed with the Japanese stuff that they don't see anything else. Don't think reasoning with them like this is gonna work.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably right. I was like that a few years ago, actually; thankfully a friend of mine introduced me to Valve and Black Isle and I changed my tune~

I'm still gonna try :< American games are good guys, and they're not just bad Halo knockoffs :

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You forgot to mention Western RPGs.

Perosnally I don't think the West needs a JRPG style game. They can get those from Japan. I think what would be better is to try to make JRPGs and WRPGs meet in the middle somewhere.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
and even RPGs. And not just average RPGs, either; there are games like Planescape: Torment, one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

:P

Agreed on the meeting in the middle. I'd like to see Western RPGs do something that isn't high fantasy or gritty space mercenaries (guys, there are other genres) for once, at the very least.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading comprehension, lol.

Yeah, I'm... really sick of both. And I really need to pick up PS:T.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hideously difficult to find, but so unbelievably worth it. Not the best gameplay around (it can get a bit dull at points) but an RPG which *gasp* doesn't focus on combat and is *gasp* neither about space marines nor high fantasy. zounds!

Shame it didn't sell well though. :\

[identity profile] rhaella.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
PS:T is utterly brilliant in every possible way. <3

[identity profile] shunraiken.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Man, the original Half Life was the game that got me to like shooters in the first place. Indigo Prophecy was also amazing-- one of my suitemates back in college had it, so I got to watch her play it. Just picked up a copy for myself, in fact. And then there's Bioware with things like Jade Empire... yeah, there's plenty of good stuff that's not from Japan.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Indigo Prophecy was so intense that I finished it in about two days of almost nonstop playing my freshman year of college. I remember during the Asylum level literally falling out of my chair from freaking out. And Bioware just does fantastic work in general. My introduction to shooters came through System Shock 2... which also got me past my fear of horror games (you survive THAT, you can survive most things.)

[identity profile] shunraiken.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Indigo Prophecy is in my stack of things to play (which is about three feet high right now, no lie)-- right now I'm working through Tales of the Abyss and then I have Tales of Vesperia for when I'm done with that, but 9-5 jobs do not lend themselves kindly to lots of gaming time, alas.

Ooh, is System Shock 2 good? I think I've seen it around in used games stores and I'm a HUGE survival horror fan, so it might be right up my alley...

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
SS2 is the inspiration for Bioshock; very old-skool game and very difficult. Also very hard to get it to run on modern machines, but if you see it I highly reccomend it. Also google about for the mods, there are quite a few that make the game a lot better (mostly improving the graphics and fixing a few really annoying glitches)

It's like a cross between your typical shooter, an RPG, and survival horror. You have a lot of guns and you're skilled, but everything's gone so horribly wrong that it's survival horror, esp becuase you run out of ammo VERY fast and your guns tend to break very quickly. The RPG elements come in where you can improve your character as you progress and make him very different - you can stat up a gearhead, a straight shooter, or a mentalist, or anything in between really. depends on your playstyle.

TL;DR, it's a FANTASTIC game, definitely get it.

[identity profile] shunraiken.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
... okay, that just plain sounds awesome. I will definitely have to look into picking that up!
