Mysteries

Looking for good new mystery stuff - books, TV, movies, or anything else. I mostly like either hardboiled stuff or cozy / "classic" stuff but I'm open to anything!! Just post whatever mystery stuff you like!!!

Re: Mysteries

Jessica Fletcher books for the cozy mysteries. I'm not a huge TV series fan but I like the books.

Broadchurch maybe? I really enjoyed it. I think it counts as mystery.

Older stuff:

Granada Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett
Foyle's War
Inspector Lynley Mysteries
New Tricks
Inspector Morse
Lewis - if you liked Inspector Morse, definitely watch this
Veronica Mars

Newer stuff:

Midsomer Murders
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
Death in Paradise
ABC Murders (a new Poirot adaptation with John Malkovich)
Unforgotten - not many seasons/episodes, but well written slow burner
Elementary
Endeavour - if you liked Inspector Morse, definitely watch this but it's not necessary to have seen Inspector Morse to get it

Books:

Kerry Greenwood, Miss Fisher Murder mysteries books that the TV series was adapted from
Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series and Vicky Bliss series - more cozy/humor
C.S. Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr - regency murder mystery, really good!

If you haven't checked out Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books yet, I'd definitely rec those. They're half Agatha Christiesque classic detective stories / half noir, with an absolutely delightful narrator. They're my personal absolute favorite mystery books.

The Agatha Christie Poirot books or TV shows with David Suchet as Poirot are excellent.

a lot of what I would have said has already been mentioned but I do want to add two things:
The Chestnut Man--a very spooky novel about a serial killer. The guy who wrote it is Danish but I got a good translation into English.
CSI, both Vegas and New York but I wouldn't watch the Vegas ones during or after a major character died at the ind of S8.

Father Brown 2013 is great. There are some fanvids and some shipping going on.
Sledge Hammer is very funny.
Monk 2002 is also not bad. Adrian Monk is a brilliant San Francisco detective, whose obsessive compulsive disorder just happens to get in the way.
Life on Mars bbc
Psych 2006

For a more serious mood:
Murder Rooms 2000
Whitechapel 2009

I like Dick Francis. He writes in and around the world of steeple chasing in the UK, as he was himself a steeple chase jockey for most of his life. Good research and interesting mysteries, good characters.

His very last couple books, written with his son, and the books written only by his son after Dick Francis died are not nearly as good as his older work (done with a lot of help from his wife).

Maureen Jennings, she's a great author. She does Murdoch Mysteries, and her other books are really good too.

Moonlighting has always been on of my favourite mystery TV shows. Murdoch Mysteries is another that I enjoy a lot.

The recent Maigret series with Rowan Atkinson was just spectacular.

MCU Tony centric

any new long fics you liked, without Steve bashing? Something with the old MCU feel? Maybe AUs or crossovers.

I can't think of anything new. 'Tales of the Bots' is Tony/Steve, if you're in to that.

Re: MCU Tony centric

Hmm. How new is new?

The only Tony centric recs I have are Peter/Tony. If you're squicked by that ship, I totally understand. Bail now.

Covet by "ride to church anon" - This author's best fic, IMO, is Revelations, but it's from Peter's POV, which is why I recced you Covet instead, since it's from Tony's POV. Covet is very good too. I haven't been in the MCU fandom for long, so I don't entirely know what you mean by "the old MCU feel" but this fic does have most of the other Avengers in it, living at the compound, managing to get along. Also, "ride to church anon" is hella good at writing all the characters, not just the ones she's shipping. There's no underage content in this fic.

Adult Supervision by doveslayer - Absolutely phenomenal Tony POV. This author has a true gift for dialogue, and for writing Tony's internal thoughts in a way feels deeply in character and real. BUT...it's an abandoned WIP. Also, Peter is underage in this one, and there is phone sex. I think he's sixteen, maybe seventeen?

Horror Literature

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Preferably either Asian horror OR something with heavy Christian imagery, and preferably something recent-ish (saay past 10 years). No Stephen King, please, I've read quite enough of his stuff. Novels and short story collections are both fine.

I recently read Andrew Michael Hurley's Devil's Day, and I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot, but found the ending disappointing and found the MC's attitude towards his wife annoying, he was very dismissive when the wife tried to tell him that stuff was wrong. So if that (characters being dismissive to the point of having no sympathy at all to others' worries) could be avoided, it would be great.

Re: Horror Literature

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You could give James Blaylock's "Christian trilogy" a try. Closer to 20 or 30 years old, and it's somewhere between horror and fantasy so not that scary, and IIRC it's not actually a trilogy (just thematically connected, not a single narrative). BUT I do think it's good so maybe that counterbalances it somewhat.

I don't know any Asian ones or ones with Christian imagery. But some of my favorites from recent years:

-The Ruins by Scott Smith
-The Troop by Nick Cutter
-NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

Shetland, the series. Shading towards noir, especially the later series. But the landscapes are wonderful and there's some cool history stuff.
