OK, like... no judgment but I feel like Criminal Minds is a little bit weird of a show to do that with

OP

*shrug* No weirder than any other crime drama. It's all fictional.

I thought Criminal Minds was actually based on real homicides, obviously in a fictional way, sometimes more so than others, but inspired by nonetheless.

Not the OP but I've seen the show and... eh, sorta but not really. There might be individual episodes with similar elements of a real life case, but I wouldn't say they're based on real homicides.

That's fair, I admit I stopped watching after an episode recounted a killer that was based not too far from where I lived, so it probably just hit a little too close to home for me.

I just love hearing about places I recognize. It makes me happy when shows get it right. Like I recently watched a Criminal Minds episode set in Boston and they got location names and general descriptions right and it made me really happy.

Honestly more murdery shows should be set in Ohio. We got a lot of murderin' here.

We do, unfortunately. And some weird criminal cases, too.

I live in Tasmania, Australia, and whenever anything or anyone even vaguely indicates it's aware of my state's existence, I am EXTATIC.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's set in Tasmania, there's a good chance everyone in it will die. Unless it's Rosehaven.

The climax of American Gods (the book, idk if the show will ever go there, never watched it) takes place in Rock City, Tennessee. I used to go there every summer when I was a kid so when I read the vivid descriptions of things I knew, I was so enchanted. I'll never forget that feeling, like something special had happened to me because I knew this place so well.

i get excited when people mention arizona lmao, even when it's just like a generic desert reference or something else inconsequential. i become nine years old for the seconds long it takes to respond like "hey i live there :D"

I'm watching Murder in the Heartland on Investigation Discovery right now and the episode is dealing with German Town Ohio. Just thought I'd share for you.

*German Village sorry

Missouri is always so weird when it's on TV/in the movies. At least it *looked* like Missouri in Winter's Bone, but the people were a bit over the top 'Deliverance' for anybody I've ever known....

It was fun to see Kansas City on Supernatural, but it didn't really look like KC. Ah, well! :D

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't live in Missouri, but I've visited + seen Winter's Bone, and now that you say it, I'm surprised to realize the movie was set there. The movie seems more Southern than that parts of the state I've been to for sure.

Yeah, Missouri in the movies/tv always seems to be....Arkansas. It's so weird. They did *film* it in Missouri, not all that far from where I live, and the state is beautiful.

Just...not quite so southern, heh.

I stopped getting excited about mentions of Minnesota or Wisconsin because they always get everything wrong. Minnesota is always portrayed as too bumpy and Wisconsin is always portrayed as too flat.

In Bridesmaids the road between Milwaukee and Chicago is a dinky two-lane country road instead of the multi-lane interstate of reality (and it's too flat). I get that the smaller road works better for those scenes, but it's still just such a glaringly out of place setting.

There's an X-Files episode where they go to Minneapolis and some local law enforcement guy says people don't even lock their doors there. It's a big city. It used to be the biggest city west of the Mississippi. People fucking lock their doors in big cities.

In the first season of Fargo, a mix-up leaves a foreign exchange student at the airport. His host wonders, "How did no one notice an African kid at the Twin Cities airport, LOL?" Uh, really, really easily. (Also, the Paul Bunyan and Babe statues in Bemidji are bigger and stupider-looking in real life.)

I do the same thing, lol.
