I agree that harassment is wrong and unjustified. I also think that criticism of characters, or ships, or viewpoints is fine and good. People should be able to air out their criticisms of those things, whether it's on moral grounds, or on some other grounds. And I think sometimes people get overly defensive and mistake legitimate (if maybe pointed) criticism for harassment. And that's frustrating. It's a difficult line to draw at times, particularly on the Internet, where people seem categorically uninterested in drawing it.

This kind of argument would fly in 2012. It's 2019 and antis are claiming that characters who are childhood friends are incest, pairs which had a mild argument once are abuse and a two year age gap between adults is pedophilia.

I've seen people aggressively doxxed over liking a ship that somebody decided was incest when it wasn't. I've seen people decide to brigade on anyone who shipped that ship and try and ruin real life careers over people who shipped that ship. I have seen so many awful things over these past five or so years of fandom. It's just gone off the rails on tumblr and twitter completely.

(*For anyone who doesn't recognize what an anti is, here's the definition from urbandictionary:

Someone who is anti-shipping towards specific pairs, often to the point of harassing and/or threatening shippers. They usually claim to only hate ships with pedophilic, incestuous, abusive, or otherwise problematic elements. However, many of them will do incredible mental gymnastics to call any ship that rivals their OTP "problematic".
Antis are calling the Alice X Bob ship pedophilia and incest because they were a freshman and a senior at the same high school 10 years ago.

I can't believe antis will actually dox people for shipping Alice X Bob.

If you ship Alice X Bob, block these antis. They're filling shippers' inboxes with gore, porn, and suicide bait.

Sure, I see your point. I think the line I'm trying to draw is, if someone is responding to a critique based on the content of that critique, obviously that's fine and totally above board. Either side might be right or wrong on the merits, that's just how arguments work.

But I think there's a specific kind of response to criticism that attacks it for being criticism, not for the content of what is being said. And that's something that I think can become a problem, especially when people respond to content-full criticism as though it were harassment. People should be able to air out their criticism or point of view without being unreasonably attacked for it, just like fans should be able to do fandom without being unreasonably attacked by it.

Solid advice. I suggest everyone do this as well.

I just needed to vent about entitlement from rabid antis, because unfortunately they're always gonna be here. Bunch of little hate-filled pustules ready to fuck with people for their own masturbatory, narcissistic pleasure. It's the behavior that bothers me. I don't give a crap if people are shippers or non-shippers. Fandom is a hobby, not work. It should be done however one pleases. The end.

Honestly, this. If someone doesn't ship the ship you prefer, then go find people who do, instead of trying to convince someone not to ship their ship.
