Baby talk

Where do you fall on the baby talk issue? It is acceptable as a joke? When with babies and puppies? Never?

I baby talk to all animals. Or when I see pictures of animals. Or in my car as I'm heading home to my cat. Yes, I'm that cat person. And I'm okay with it.

It's an abomination of evolution and never acceptable under circumstance. A mere sentence should be grounds for capital punishment, with a life long imprisonment clause for grandmas only.

I don't know if it's baby talk necessarily, but my tone definitely changes with animals. Funnily, I talk to infants/babies like they're small and mute adults.

Yup same with me. I think it is because even infants can have some grasping of some words. Animals mostly are grasping tone. And I want to come across as completely non-threatening and loving to animals. A soft baby-ish tone conveys that.

Baby talk supposedly helps babies learn to talk better. The high pitched sound makes babies (and animals) focus more.

I find it annoying but I usually keep quiet about because people already think I'm a freak or something for not kissing their ass because they have a kid.

I do that with my sister's baby and her dog. I can get their attention more easily. When I use my regular tone my nephew ignores me, or I assume he doesn't realize I'm talking to him.

I only do baby talk around human and animal babies.

I find it annoying, but apparently it helps babies learn to talk faster/better, so I try to ignore it.

Depends on how we're defining baby talk. Vocal modulation and simplified vocabulary and grammatical structure is actually very useful for teaching babies and very small children how to communicate, both because more precise sound differentiation is something that comes with practice and because they're a lot less likely to get frustrated with sounds they can reproduce.

The vocal modulation is also useful with animals, because it lets them learn what you sound like when you're addressing them. They'll still only learn a few words (this is the dinner sound, this is the I was caught doing something I shouldn't sound, etc), but being able to get your pet's attention's generally a good thing.

It's kind of eyeroll-worthy when it's one adult addressing another, but there's a reason we've developed the habit of baby talk across multiple cultures and multiple languages.

Holy gods no, never, never, fucking *ever*, and especially not with babies, children, or the person you're having sex with.

That last one would not only make me kick someone out of bed but possibly also just plain kick them.

With babies and puppies and short sarcastic statements. But I don't have to hear it much anyway.

I baby talk to the dog, but I've made it a point to not baby-talk to babies. Granted, I haven't known very many babies, but the one I've had the most, um, conversation with was the most no-nonsense toddler ever who seemed to appreciate that I was talking to her, a two-year-old, the same way the big folk talk to each other.
