you'll have to pry John Oliver Zazu out of my cold, dead hands

the others, eh yeah I agree

I wanna see Lil Rel Howery do Pumbaa tbh

Zazu makes sense but I agree with the Desus and Mero dreamcasting. It's nothing that I'm upset over or will keep me from seeing it, though.

They are voice actors. All three of those are played by white guys in the Broadway play. Maybe Broadway fans are just less whiny.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2019-07-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The fuck does the Broadway musical have to do with the creepy uncanny valley movie remake?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
What does it being uncanny valley have to do with voice actors???

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2019-07-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you care so much that someone idly wished that the movie had an all Black cast? I mean, who really cares?

I find it funny that this was posted just after the whole Ariel thing blew up. It would have been submitted before, of course, but ... sorry OP, I'm finding it hard to take you seriously after that shitshow.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it matter? It's voice acting (and before anyone argues about representation matters, these are not white voice actors taking black roles from black voice actors, they're fucking animals).

It does take place in Africa.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if people get to argue that a fictional Arendelle doesn't have to have any people of color because it's Scandinavian (which I think is a stupid argument, but it happened), then when something takes place in Sub-Saharan Africa, in Swahili-speaking regions, I think a stronger argument could be made, not just for black voice actors, but, you know, for Swahili-speaking African actors, actually.

You think it's a stupid argument to not have coloured people in ye olde time Scandinavia? Ahahahahaha

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. It seems more than a little racist to me to imply that there's somehow a difference between the way white voice actors sound versus the way black voice actors sound.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
This comment makes me think you don’t watch much animation.. There isn't always, but quite often, you can tell based on the rasp and timbre of the VA’s voice what race they are. Not that it says anything about talent, but the difference is recognizable for those with smaller range.

Then you have the crazy versatile ones that can play a range of races, but they definitely do perform to that, employ distinct inflection for black v white v Asian v Hispanic. Phil Lamar, Dee Bradley Baker, and Carlos Alazraqui all come to mind.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I just can't take this stuff seriously anymore. Who the fuck cares?

I hate that this secret implies that John Oliver is voicing Zazu because this means I'll have to watch this goddamn film now

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
implies? isn't it confirmed

I'm sure it is, but I've been trying to pretend this film never existed up until now *g*

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're thinking too much into this.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's voice acting, who cares. Let women play men, men play women, blacks playing whites and whites playing asians as long as the voice fits the character.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Except that somehow, mysteriously, it always turns out that "the voice [that] fits the character" belongs to a white person. Like, pretty much every dang time.
Weird, huh.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA but I mean, this might be the one time that argument doesn’t hold water. The 3 white dudes in this secret happen to be the human embodiment of these characters irl.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
The real question is does en travesti really work with voice acting?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and while you're at it, why don't you protest Star Wars that had a black actor (James Earl Jones) voice a white character (Darth Vader)? What a blatant misrepresentation! Go ahead, write them a strongly worded letter, make the world a better place! I count on you!
