I like Tennant on the whole and I liked Ten; but he had moments of real overacting in Doctor Who AND Good Omens.

He's a really charming, likable actor who is really good at doing all of the classic Doctor-y Doctor things and his run is objectively the most popular and successful period of the show. And it's not like having weird relationships or dynamics with companions is unique to 10.

I almost don't know what to tell you. If you don't like the melodramatics and soap opera stuff, fine, taste is taste, but.

I think there's a lot of reasons for his popularity: he was only the second Doctor of the new show, Eccleston just wasn't around that long before Nine regenerated whereas Tennant is the longest-serving New Who Doctor (although he's only ahead of Capaldi by six months, and Capaldi in turn just barely edges out Matt Smith) and was the Doctor when the show was becoming more popular internationally, so a lot of people who became fans of New Who joined in during Ten's time (Eleven is also popular in this way), at the same time some Old Who fans may have found him more Doctor-y than Nine, Tennant is an attractive and charismatic actor who was only in his mid-30s at the time and was the first "young and cute" Doctor of the new show, and I think a lot of people just found Ten's antics and persona entertaining.

I'm not a fan of 10, but ... more full of himself than any other doctor before or since? Familiarise yourself with 6, christ.

He gets the love because people think he's cute. That's it, that's why, he's a bit of a prettyboy.

Generally speaking, 9 wasn't particularly attractive, 11 was quirky looking and 12 was an old man. 10 is easier on the eyes, that's why he was popular.

He wasn't particularly good otherwise. He had moments of gold and moments of shit, some really fucking excellent episodes (most notably Midnight, which showed his acting ability beyond his "hilarious" tendency to over-act) and some really, truly awful ones. He was ... pretty average.

The reason he's popular is because he looks like how he looks. The end.

What standard are we holding doctors to, though?

Like, which doctor didn't have moments of shit and truly awful episodes during their run?

David Tennant is generally a likeable guy and he's an ascended fanboy in this role. It was basically a life-long dream of his. That's probably why a lot of people loved him. Also he's lucky enough to have had the keys to the TARDIS during the show's peak. I know Matt Smith's tenure continued to ride that wave a bit as well but I don't think any of the subsequent seasons have matched what it was like when Tennant was in the role. Just the overall hype for the show etc.

Ngl even as a Tennant fan I hated some of the writing during his tenure. In 2005-6 I had just experienced an unrequited love situation myself so I LOATHED how he treated Martha and am glad she got out and moved on eventually.

Honestly, though, I feel the same way about Ten's seasons as I do about his character. They are overrated. Moffat was just a better showrunner. The writing was better. The stories were better. RTD had some serious issues. They didn't show as much during 9's run, but they really came out with 10.

I do like some of the things RTD did but he was just as guilty as what fans often throw at Moffat as an accusation. There's nothing as self-indulgent as Ten's last story where I felt like it was RTD saying goodbye more than Ten or indeed David. I really really can't stand Ten's last episode.

I think this is why I mostly ducked out of the fandom. It felt like you either have to love RTD or Moffat and hate the other but there's no middle ground. They both have good points but they're also both infuriating.

I wish I knew more people like you in the fandom. It became such a fad to bash Eleven and Moffat that I withdrew from the fandom entirely just so I could keep enjoying the show in peace.

I don't want to get into the Moffat RTD wars again - at all - but acting like Moffat didn't have egregious issues as a showrunner as well is completely abusrd

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
No one ITT said he didn't, just that they prefer his stuff.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
The post I was replying to literally said that Moffat was just a better show runner. That's not a preference thing, that's a "Moffat is better" thing, which they justify on the grounds that RTD had some issues that came out during the seasons with 10.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What part of that says he didn't also have issues, though? Him being a better showrunner doesn't negate his problems, nor do his problems make RTD's less egregious.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Because he was hot, duh.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-07 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because he's not actually that bad.

A Doctor that is full of himself? Colin Baker might like to have a word with you.

Tenth is just too charming and fun. He was definitely my Doctor along with Third and Fourth. 11th reminds me a bit of Patrick Troughton in some parts (definitely the bowtie is a homage to Patrick). 12 tries to be Third, but Moffatt couldn't even give his Doctor justice. 13th is very nice and charming. Her Doctor reminds me of Peter Davison in places, with a nod to Tom Baker's scarf (though his is longer than hers and has a different color scheme).

Even if we are only talking about new!Who 11 & 12 were as arrogant if not more. There's a lot to love about 10 (it's too late, I'll expand on it more another day) and him and 9 are still my favorites new!Who Doctors (I haven't seen 13 yet however).

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
For me, part of his charm is that he was my first Doctor. I'll always have a soft spot for him because Ten made me fall in love with the show (plus it helped that I watched him during the final episodes of Martha's run and really got into the show during Donna's run). I'm a little critical of him now (hated him with Rose, hated how he treated Wilf in the final episode, plus a few other tiny things), but he's still my second favorite Doctor (Twelve being the first).

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
9 was the better Doctor, 10 had the better stories, 11 got boring pretty quickly, and I couldn't really get into 12 for some reason.

Rose was ok. Donna was so annoying I'd have chucked her out an airlock in her first episode. Her grandfather was the best thing in that season, hands down. Martha was just kind of there.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
