They're two separate issues. The translation is (allegedly) homophobic and the translator is (allegedly) a defender of loli stuff.

The funny thing about this is that most fanboys I've seen online who hardcore stan their loli waifus tend to be massively homophobic assholes so j wouldn't even be surprised. But that's nether here nor there in this case, I guess.

The thing is that one of the original writers strictly oversaw all the translation and forced it to be as literal as possible, and he had to approve every line before it was finalized. If it's not gay enough, it's at least as much his fault as the translator's.

What's supposed to be homophobic about it? I mind of missed most of the wank about it so far.

The original translation had lines where Kaworu says he "loves" Shinji and considers him "worthy of love"; the new translation has him say that he "likes" Shinji and considers him "worthy of grace".

From my understanding, the likes versus love one is arguably justifiable based on the original Japanese, but "worthy of grace" is sort of awkward and weird and bad.

Is "awkward and weird and bad" not an acceptable summary of Kaworu though?

It's just that he's super pretty and the fangirls have a bishounen to ship Shinji with, so we're supposed to pretend it's not.

Not an Eva watcher but isn't the pairing considered canon? I thought the creator or something went on record saying so.

I might be biased because I hate NGE but going into it with zero expectations, including about shipping, I was honestly surprised how blatant their relationship was, though. It wasn't just some yaoi fangirl thing.

Yeah, the like/love thing is a super common issue with Japanese translations so eeeehhh but the other thing sound sketchy. I'd need to rewatch the episode in question since it's been years since I last watched it and my Japanese is admittedly rusty at best but I could have sworn that new translation doesn't really fit.

I'm watching the series for the first time on Netflix (no spoilers!) As a slash fan, I'm excited for the gay. Is it really homophobic?

In the original, the gay was lowkey. In the Netflix sub, it's nonexistent.

Okay so from reading some of the other comments, this is probably Neon Genesis Evangelion (?) which I know by name only, haven't ever seen cause space mecha isn't my thing, and wouldn't know the main characters of from a hole in the wall. But thanks for the sass, because clearly knowing one obscure thing means I have seen everything ever regardless of genre (of which EQ and NGE do not even share remotely).

Not the same anon, and I mean no sass, but my surprise is legit. The series is so huge and has been for so long, that I would assume anyone with some interest in anime/manga and fandom would know the main character just through seeing other people post about it.

Not a good or a bad thing, it is just genuinely surprising.

It's a typical tactic for a certain subset of asshole fans. Pedophilia is genuinely terrible, so all people they dislike must be pedophiles because that grants a veneer of righteousness to their rage.

It's a typical mob tactic to justify threats of violence.

Assholes: "He translated a couple of words in a way that is true to the original and now the series doesn't validate our ship! He deserves to die!"

Twitter: "That seems excessive as a reaction to someone who was only doing his job to the best of his ability."

Asshole: "What if we insinuate he's a nazi pedophile?"

Twitter: "That changes everything. BURN THE WITCH!"

I want to say I'm surprised, but honestly flinging the word "pedophile" for people they don't like has become so common it has sadly lost it's impact.

That said, I do think the retranslation was ridiculous but it did came from the higher ups from Japan, not from the translators themselves to make it sound more """ambiguous""". Meh.

Wait. So... they are trying to paint someone as a pedophile (with the reason of him defending loli stuff?) because their ship of 14 year old kids isn't as obvious in the new translation anymore?

Not that I have an issue with either the characters' ages or the ship in general, I love that ship. But that sounds massively hypocritical
