Mulan teaser

I am so excited! It will only have instrumental versions of any of the songs from the animated cartoon. It also has no Mushu. This looks like a more serious tone and I am here for that!

That looks excellent. I'm fine with no humorous side-kick in a live action movie, me.

Me too! I can't stand the humorous side-kicks 90% of the time anyway.

I mostly agree. Except that Mushu is one of the few I like. Mostly because dragon.

I like dragons, too. I'm just...eh on sidekicks, as a rule.

I’m fine with it in animated movies, too. I’d be fine with no more “funny” animal sidekicks in any Disney movie ever again.

Not thrilled. Afaik, nobody among the writers and director is actually Chinese and I have very little faith in that. And I think they should have stuck with their version, tbh. The songs were kind of the best thing about it. If I want a more faithful adaption of the legend, I'll watch one of the several Chinese Mulan-centered movies.

SA
And some of the costume design is just sad and pathetic from what can be seen in the trailer.

Eh, people complain when Disney doesn't stray from the animated version (BatB and The Lion King) and people complain when they go to far away from the animated version (Mulan). If I wanted to watch the version with the songs, I'd watch the animated movie.

Also, Niki Caro directed The Whale Rider which was amazing.

I read that Ang Lee had been asked to direct but had to turn it down due to scheduling conflict. That's a shame. :(

Since it's getting a China release Disney had to work with a Chinese film production company IIRC.

This may be one I'm actually looking forward to seeing, and might possibly do so in theatres.

Aw, no Mushu? Well, I'll probably still go watch it. I haven't been a fan of Disney's live action movies so far, but I do love Mulan and here's hoping that the action scenes will be awesome.

I'm a little sad at the lack of vocals, if only because I found Reflection a powerful song and I'd be interested to see what sort of cover treatment it might get to bring it more in line with the aesthetics of the live action movie. But I get that what they're going for wouldn't really work as a musical, and they can't just shove one random song in and call it a day.

I am hopeful that they might cover it as the end credit song, though. And the trailer's intriguing enough that this might actually be the one live action Disney remake I go see in the theater rather than waiting until it hits Netflix.

Mushu is confirmed not to be in it? Well, if the tone is more serious, he's definitely an awkward comic relief, but he was basically the secondary lead.

I like the tone of the new trailer, and I don't mind that it's doing its own thing, but it's interesting. Does it imply Mulan always enjoyed swordplay and such? That sort of changes her motivation as opportunistic honor-grabber, wh may have come in with a free spirit but literally had to learn everything about soldiering in camp, and suggests she always wanted to be a warrior.

Also means no "Let's Get Down to Business" routine, best damn moment in the movie. haha..

I was mad about the lack of music and Li Dhang (TBH I didn't care much for Mushu either way), but this teaser brought me so tears.

A film made by an American studio targeted for kids around the world, especially girls, where the lead is an Asian woman and that is the draw. Not the music, not the romance, this young woman presented like one would see a character like Captain America come to life. My whole life I never saw that, and to see it now I didn't realize it would reduce me to tears but there you go.

Also, I really like that the film looks different. It's not presented as just a shot for shot remake of the animated version with weird little tweaks here and there.

I saw a "Rest in Peace" gifset on Tumblr this morning and thought it was a really fucked-up fandom joke of some sort. 20 years old is awful, poor kiddo.

Changing up the characters in the avatars is a really interesting way to go, I think.

That's a cool idea. Also, the first one was really good. And I'll watch Karen Gillan in anything.

I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand, I am really loving the old-guys-in-the-avatars. On the other hand, I really loved Jack Black playing a girl, so I'm a bit disappointed that he isn't returning to that role.

Still, I thought the trailer was great and I think this is definitely a good way to do the sequel. I can't wait until December.
