I think you can sincerely like and care about female characters, and *also* think all those other less woke girls totally don't appreciate them like you do and trash on other fans.

I see lots of female fans call other female fans are misogynists for not liking certain characters, even if the supposed misogynist likes *other* female characters, just not the one in question.

Yep, I've definitely gotten that. I posted a secret a few months ago about disliking a female character and made the mistake of mentioning that she also was in the way of my (m/m) ship and got a couple comments that I was just pissed she interfered with my slash ship and clearly I was a misogynist. Although in other fandoms I dislike a guy who interferes with my f/f ship, a woman who interferes with my m/f ship (because I like one of the women and dislike the other), etc. And in the case of the secret it just happened to be a coincidence because I disliked her for several seasons before she was in the way of a ship.

I mean, just for the record, liking female characters X, Y, and Z does not preclude the possibility that you dislike female character A for a reason that's misogynistic.

I want to be very clear that I'm not saying that this is true of you, or anyone else in this thread. Just, liking some female characters doesn't necessarily prove anything about misogyny.

Yeah, but the point is if you say you dislike a character for several reasons, one of them being that they get in the way of your ship, everyone and their mother jumps to SECRET MISOGYNY and assumes you do this for every female character or something. While knowing nothing about how you feel about other characters or situations.

When in fact, most female fans don't do that, as we all seem to agree on.

So assuming that female fans who don't like a certain female character = misogyny, ironically means those don't think very highly of other female fans.

What do you mean by "a reason that's misogynistic"? To me, disliking a female character because they're female is what's misogynistic, disliking them for other reasons is not. For example, one of them I disliked because she had a tendency to intentionally say things to other characters about subjects she knew were sore spots for them, just to hurt them as much as possible. I've known people like that, and it's a shitty way to behave, regardless of gender.

Well, for example, if someone said they hated a character because she was a slut or because she didn't stay in the kitchen. Obviously those are very extreme examples but hopefully they give you an idea what my point is - of course in reality it's not going to be clear cut, it's a subject of considerable debate, etc.

Ah, ok, yeah, that makes sense. I tend to dislike characters in general for the same reasons regardless of gender (and the same reasons I dislike people in real life tbh), mainly when they just treat other characters horribly for no reason, they're overly judgey of people who are maybe weird but not hurting anyone else, etc. And a lot of it is down to the writing. A character can do something awful without me hating them if they're developed enough that I understand their motivations and can see that they're complex and human with reasons for doing the things they do, who make mistakes like everyone does. If they just seem to be assholes for no reason, I'm more likely to hate them, which I know is largely due to the writing. Like, sometimes I KNOW the writers are being lazy and clearly manipulative and they obviously want the audience to hate a character, so they just make them over the top ridiculously evil and I shouldn't fall for it but sometimes they're just such jerks I can't help but hate them anyway.

Yep! I've noticed that it's only their fave female character who actually counts, and a lot of them will happily trash the female characters they don't like, or who happen to be competition for their fave.
