I don't think there's anything wrong with that - I mean, it's not what I would want, but like you say, everyone deserves the right to choose how they want to live their own life.

What's wrong is when it's something that's imposed instead of being a choice.

Ironically deciding to live without taking responsibility for anything is a choice hahaha. You’d probably get responsibilities you don’t want forced upon you and not even be able to say no because you have no choices. I’ve not even read it or seen it but I feel bad for you wanting to live like this

Of course you feel this way. Thinking is hard. Responsibility is hard. It's always easier and more pleasant to abdicate thought and responsibility.

No, no it's not! I hated being a teenager because I wanted to be responsible for myself, not under someone else's power (and my family was a perfectly normal family, so I'm not talking abuse here). As an adult, it's great! Not necessarily easy, but great.

Huh. I admit I'm more interested in your reasons. I read the original book, and it reminded me of the theocratic anti-women government of Saudi Arabia, as something that would be utterly terrifying for women. But perhaps what you want is the feeling that you're being taken care of, that you do not want the stress of making the wrong choice that could destroy your livelihood? That might actually be something rather common, even among boys.

Like, your usual FPS gives you the power fantasy of being a super-soldier, and there's nothing wrong with daydreaming every so often about these scenarios or writing fiction, but I say this as someone that loves military sci fi: Being forcibly made a super-soldier would be a gross violation of human rights, it would be nightmarish to have genocide inflicted against your species, a militaristic government is bound to turn to the worst, and (somehow) surviving would curse you to a lifetime of trauma you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

But the reason behind most of these fantasies (which would in real life be fittingly horrific) is usually something that people wish they had in some way. A form of escapism, if you will? The Handsmaid Tale is dystopian, but you saw something you wish you had, even in it? As long as you recognize the horrific implications and it remains strictly on the realm of fantasy, neither you nor anyone else is getting hurt.

You could write something out, or even roleplay it (... not necessarily with porn in mind), but overall, I think realizing what you want from it can serve as a way to understand yourself, and find a way to lead a better and more fulfilling life.

This is such a good comment.

Are you a man? You sound like a man...

You sound white. Are you white?

Sorry, my internet's been down, but no, I'm a 35 year old woman with a full time job who periodically just has thoughts of how nice it would be to be coddled, I think.

Obviously I don't think what happens in THT is right in any respect, but a part of me just wants to 'exist' I guess, without the guesswork of is that bill due, am I going to have to work overtime this week because of sick calls or crappy coworkers?

It's a thought of escapism that isn't even probably remotely ideal in the real world.

Different anon here.

You're me basically, that first sentence describes me. Probably doesn't help that I'm otherwise super independent, live alone, and just...you know...sometimes wish that I didn't have to manage everything myself.

But I've never been interested in a romantic relationship with anyone so anybody who wants to tell me to just get a significant other can fuck right off.

I have to admit I have never seen anything to envy in the show or the book, but I think that the basic idea is part of the appeal of fundamentalist/strict religions: you have many fewer decisions when someone's telling you how to dress, what to eat, who to be friends with, etc. I say this as someone who was in one and often misses it despite the downside.

But fandom-wise I wonder why we don't see more people who are really into the lifestyle in The Handmaid's Tale. We see a few but mostly we're left to guess as to how many people actually like what's going on and aren't secretly subversive or into it for the power. I suppose that's less interesting, and if you focus on the Handmaids it's got to be pretty hard to find happy ones.

I only ever feel intense pity for people who think or want this.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-10 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, there are universes where that would be a pleasant thing, I'm sure. But not this one, ffs.
