That's disheartening, but it's possible that they've gotten behind... I hope they'll get back to you with a 'thanks'-- or a bit more!

How earlier? If it's years or so, for me sometimes there comes a point where I stop checking the comments on a fic because I start to feel embarrassed of my own writing choices and don't want to be reminded of them.

[person who posted the original comment, not person who made the secret]
The author was replying to comments in February and I was commenting in June. I think the anon below is right about them just getting a little overwhelmed, because they did respond to a comment I made on a more recent story.

Honestly, at some point I kind of...stop replying to comments on older stories. It's not personal.

It just feels weird to me. I can't really explain it.

If the person has many, many stories up, they've probably moved on mentally. I'm sure they appreciate every comment.

I do try to respond to long ones.

I'm going to! I swear!

Seriously, this secret could have been written about me. I just haven't answered anything for months. But I haven't been picking and choosing. Every comment after a certain point has been unanswered.

Oof I feel you there-- I've only been behind for about a week, but I've gone from writing in very small (practically nonexistent) fandoms to writing for one of my early fandoms that's recently gotten VERY popular, and so a week of being too busy has piled up a LOT of comments to go through...

I love comments and I love having thoughtful replies for long ones especially-- and a little note of thanks for even the shortest-- but it takes so much time when suddenly I'm getting 10-15 a chapter instead of 1-2, and I'm posting very regularly.

Oh my god, this was my comment - this is genuinely really embarrassing! I was just feeling a little mopey, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-

It's okay, nonny. Comments responses are going slowly in states right now due to so many summer holidays. If your fav writer is from US, they could be swamped with so much stuff going on right now.

I'm sorry, anon. That sucks. :(

I always assume the author has died.

I'm so bad about replying to comments if they're posted a little while after the fic. I don't know why, it just feels awkward, or I get busy and mean to reply later, and then later never comes. Then a new comment will come along and I'll get all hyped to reply to it and then remember all the others I haven't replied to and feel tremendous guilt.

In short, I'm a terrible person, but I do feel bad about it.

It's entirely possible that if the author is anything like me, they go to reply and then read your lovely words and their brain just goes "hrk-- OMGOMGOMGOMG *squee*" in a loop. I know when people write anything longer than "nice fic, I like it" on my stuff, I just geek the fuck out. I got a piece of fanart for one of my fics that I still haven't commented on because it's just so kind of them to do that and I lose what little chill I have and can't think of anything more coherent than a keysmash. xD

tl;dr version, op? They might have seen them and just need a moment to process your compliments. <3 Please don't let this stop you from commenting on fics though-- we appreciate every word!

Sometime's it's just easier to reply to a short comment than it is to someone's paragraph.
