Fullmetal Alchemist

I think I may be in the extreme minority here, but I don't think Brotherhood is superior to the original. I watched the original run first and then Brotherhood and honestly, I was put off by the faster pace and felt like because it rushes you miss out on character and plot development Brotherhood lacks the pathos and emotion of the original. It lacks the drama. I feel like it is Fullmetal Lite*.

I've honestly tried to watch Brotherhood twice now, and I don't think I've made it more than half a dozen episodes each time. It just doesn't have the same charm to me.

Agreed. It feels way too typecast "shounen" to me and it completely lacked the charm and emotional impact of the original anime, like you said. The whole Nina and Alexander thing in the original anime fucked me up, but in Brotherhood, I felt absolutely nothing when it happened. I couldn't get more than ten episodes in without getting bored because I wasn't feeling the same things that I did over the first anime despite it being the exact same series of events.

I never watched Brotherhood because I just couldn't with the manga.

It wasn't the manga's fault. I picked it up after having connected intensely with the first anime, and the tonal difference was so big that I lasted a volume and half before putting it away. I've heard almost only good things about it, and I don't doubt that it's a great comic. But the first FMA anime means too much to me, on some dumb, personal plane, for me to try and bend my brain around a different version of that story.

FWIW (fandom being fandom), I've seen people comparing the two and coming out of it preferring 2003. The lacking drama and character development in Brotherhood is indeed an argument that pops up a lot.

To be honest, the main reason I like Brotherhood is because it has a relatively happy ending compared to the original one. I did enjoy both, but I also have a weakness for happy endings, so that’s why I think Brotherhood’s a little better.

Same. Also, for some reason the visuals in Brotherhood always felt "off" and I'm forever bitter they cut bits about my favourite minor characters "for pacing reasons" that I felt were still crucial to the plot. (The exact origin of Riza's tattoo? Mustang's first team from Ishval reuniting for the Promised Day??)
