It's an absolutely absurd double standard to worry about "glorifying unhealthy lifestyles" in the context of overweight people and literally nothing else though

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously. Glorifying anorexic people is bad as well.

So - to the extent that in general people make a much bigger stink about fat positivity "glorifying unhealthy lifestyles" than they do about almost any other unhealthy lifestyle - it seems to me that the whole line of argument is BS.

In fairness, people still make a big stink about smoking. And I do seem some backlash against pro-ana websites. But there are also some really messed-up eating habits that people valorize. I recently heard two people discussing their “ketogenic” diet, and that did not sound healthy in the slightest.

You can think something is bad without listing all the OTHER things that are bad as well just to be sure no idiot can come and go "OH SO YOU THINK SMOKING IS GOOD HUH!".

This topic wasn't about smoking.

I'm not talking about you, I'm saying that this is a pattern that generally exists and that the sentiment generally is horseshit concern trolling

DA - Nah, I'd say most people are largely in agreement that smoking, frequent moderate-to-heavy drinking, hard drug use, and abuse of prescription meds are behaviors that are hella bad for you, and claiming otherwise is messed up.

And people are pretty damn unanimous that anorexia and bulimia are bad for you and shouldn't be glorified.

Compulsive spenders, hoarders, degenerate gamblers, chronic unsafe drivers, people who have unsafe sex with lots of different partners - all unhealthy/unsafe lifestyles that people absolutely side-eye and rarely glorify. Hell, I get judgmental comments from my coworkers all the time because I drink 2-3 cans of energy drink per week.

There are exceptions, sure. E.g. workaholics are often praised (as long as they're male, or young females who don't have families--yet). But the idea that society praises and romanticizes most unhealthy lifestyles, and it's only obesity that society isn't cool with is just not true.

People and media regularly glamorize or romanticize smoking, drinking, hard drug use, thinness, compulsive spending, gambling, and frequent unsafe sex with many different partners. They also sometimes portray the idea that those things have bad sides if taken to an extreme, sure, and yes, people are widely in agreement that those things are bad if taken to extremes, but that doesn't mean that glorification of those things is not widespread in the culture at the same time.

(And to be clear, I don't really have a problem with media that glorifies those things myself, but what's good for the goose is good for the gander)

This. I have a very hard time trusting that someone has good intentions when they cry 'but I'm so worried about their health!' or something like that when talking about a fat person. Because so many people suddenly LOVE to play doctor when it comes to fat people's bodies, but they won't say shit about a skinny person, even when someone looks just as unhealthy as someone who's morbidly obese.
