I'm fat myself and I honestly think the whole fat-positive trend is kind of going down the wrong path.
Mostly because I think there's a huge difference between "people shouldn't be mocked and derided because of their weight" (which is good) and glorifying morbidly obese people and unhealthy lifestyles (which, imo, is not good).

But there’s so much assumption that an overweight person MUST be living an unhealthy lifestyle. I have a mutual who had her gallbladder out and can’t eat fatty foods. Every time she goes to the doctor, they tell her to stop eating fatty foods, and ignore her when she says she isn’t and tries to redirect them to the actual problem.

Yeah and that's shit. But in general, being morbidly obese is not healthy and shouldn't be glorified. But not glorifying obesity and not being shit to fat people are not mutually exclusive.

literally no one is coddling morbidly obese people. people have no fucking clue how fat morbidly obese actually is they just throw the word around to make their fatphobia sound justified

(Anonymous) 2019-07-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like being overweight is healthy either, who cares.

good of you to show your true colours

some doctors can be really unhelpful assholes about overweight patients. I've been there and I know.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an absolutely absurd double standard to worry about "glorifying unhealthy lifestyles" in the context of overweight people and literally nothing else though

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously. Glorifying anorexic people is bad as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So - to the extent that in general people make a much bigger stink about fat positivity "glorifying unhealthy lifestyles" than they do about almost any other unhealthy lifestyle - it seems to me that the whole line of argument is BS.

In fairness, people still make a big stink about smoking. And I do seem some backlash against pro-ana websites. But there are also some really messed-up eating habits that people valorize. I recently heard two people discussing their “ketogenic” diet, and that did not sound healthy in the slightest.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You can think something is bad without listing all the OTHER things that are bad as well just to be sure no idiot can come and go "OH SO YOU THINK SMOKING IS GOOD HUH!".

This topic wasn't about smoking.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about you, I'm saying that this is a pattern that generally exists and that the sentiment generally is horseshit concern trolling

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - Nah, I'd say most people are largely in agreement that smoking, frequent moderate-to-heavy drinking, hard drug use, and abuse of prescription meds are behaviors that are hella bad for you, and claiming otherwise is messed up.

And people are pretty damn unanimous that anorexia and bulimia are bad for you and shouldn't be glorified.

Compulsive spenders, hoarders, degenerate gamblers, chronic unsafe drivers, people who have unsafe sex with lots of different partners - all unhealthy/unsafe lifestyles that people absolutely side-eye and rarely glorify. Hell, I get judgmental comments from my coworkers all the time because I drink 2-3 cans of energy drink per week.

There are exceptions, sure. E.g. workaholics are often praised (as long as they're male, or young females who don't have families--yet). But the idea that society praises and romanticizes most unhealthy lifestyles, and it's only obesity that society isn't cool with is just not true.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
People and media regularly glamorize or romanticize smoking, drinking, hard drug use, thinness, compulsive spending, gambling, and frequent unsafe sex with many different partners. They also sometimes portray the idea that those things have bad sides if taken to an extreme, sure, and yes, people are widely in agreement that those things are bad if taken to extremes, but that doesn't mean that glorification of those things is not widespread in the culture at the same time.

(And to be clear, I don't really have a problem with media that glorifies those things myself, but what's good for the goose is good for the gander)

This. I have a very hard time trusting that someone has good intentions when they cry 'but I'm so worried about their health!' or something like that when talking about a fat person. Because so many people suddenly LOVE to play doctor when it comes to fat people's bodies, but they won't say shit about a skinny person, even when someone looks just as unhealthy as someone who's morbidly obese.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely seconding this.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's less glorifying and more like unnecessarily coddling. People act like a fat person's feelings are so delicate that it's rude to discuss them being fat, or feeling like people have to reassure them that being fat is ~totally okay~ even when the fat person in question is literally talking about themselves being fat.

I get it, fatness is a sometimes a sensitive subject, but too many people fall all over themselves trying to be sensitive without idk, taking the actual fat person they're talking to into account, and it ends up dehumanizing in a different way. Like they're talking to a child.

The response to "I'm gonna grow my hair out" isn't automatically "oh, but you don't need to! You're fine the way you are!" because that'd be kinda stupid, obviously that's a personal choice made by the person with the hair. But when a fat person, especially a fat woman, goes "I'm gonna lose some weight," there's suddenly a dozen people reassuring them that their decision is unnecessary

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's how I feel about it. Like, obviously don't go around bullying people for being fat. That's shitty. Also, stop telling fat people they're fat. We know. We have mirrors. But doing a full 180 and starting to gush at any given moment how flawless, beautfiful and amazing any obese person is? That can be pretty damn condescending as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-15 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I know thin people who eat worse than anyone else but you don't see people harping on them for ~unhealthy lifestyles~. It's 100% about being thin and pretty by societal standards, not healthy.
