So then you're not losing weight for cosplay reasons, you're losing weight because it's what you personally want to do with your body.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's the distinction OP was making.

I read it as, it doesn't matter whether it's for cosplay or any other personal reason, OP is tired of people telling them "it's okay to be fat" as though they're secretly(?) doing it because they care about others' opinions instead of for themselves

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my point is - if you say you're losing weight for cosplay reasons, of course people are going to say you don't need to lose weight for cosplay reasons, because it is true that you don't need to lose weight for cosplay reasons.

Huh? You make it sound like these are two mutually exclusive things. OP wants to lose weight because they personally want to use their body to cosplay, but not as a fat version of a character.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-15 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
DA - exactly. People can have all sorts of reasons for wanting to lose weight and draw on all sorts of motivations and inspirations to do so. Their personal reasoning is not invalid just because it's not "necessary" to be skinny to cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ignore everyone. Good luck with your weight loss journey, OP!

As long as it's something you want to do and you made the decision on your own instead of feeling pressured into it by other people, I think it's alright. Good luck!

I'm fat myself and I honestly think the whole fat-positive trend is kind of going down the wrong path.
Mostly because I think there's a huge difference between "people shouldn't be mocked and derided because of their weight" (which is good) and glorifying morbidly obese people and unhealthy lifestyles (which, imo, is not good).

But there’s so much assumption that an overweight person MUST be living an unhealthy lifestyle. I have a mutual who had her gallbladder out and can’t eat fatty foods. Every time she goes to the doctor, they tell her to stop eating fatty foods, and ignore her when she says she isn’t and tries to redirect them to the actual problem.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah and that's shit. But in general, being morbidly obese is not healthy and shouldn't be glorified. But not glorifying obesity and not being shit to fat people are not mutually exclusive.

some doctors can be really unhelpful assholes about overweight patients. I've been there and I know.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an absolutely absurd double standard to worry about "glorifying unhealthy lifestyles" in the context of overweight people and literally nothing else though

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously. Glorifying anorexic people is bad as well.

This. I have a very hard time trusting that someone has good intentions when they cry 'but I'm so worried about their health!' or something like that when talking about a fat person. Because so many people suddenly LOVE to play doctor when it comes to fat people's bodies, but they won't say shit about a skinny person, even when someone looks just as unhealthy as someone who's morbidly obese.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely seconding this.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's less glorifying and more like unnecessarily coddling. People act like a fat person's feelings are so delicate that it's rude to discuss them being fat, or feeling like people have to reassure them that being fat is ~totally okay~ even when the fat person in question is literally talking about themselves being fat.

I get it, fatness is a sometimes a sensitive subject, but too many people fall all over themselves trying to be sensitive without idk, taking the actual fat person they're talking to into account, and it ends up dehumanizing in a different way. Like they're talking to a child.

The response to "I'm gonna grow my hair out" isn't automatically "oh, but you don't need to! You're fine the way you are!" because that'd be kinda stupid, obviously that's a personal choice made by the person with the hair. But when a fat person, especially a fat woman, goes "I'm gonna lose some weight," there's suddenly a dozen people reassuring them that their decision is unnecessary

I know thin people who eat worse than anyone else but you don't see people harping on them for ~unhealthy lifestyles~. It's 100% about being thin and pretty by societal standards, not healthy.

I'm also trying to lose weight, mostly for health reasons but also because I hate the way it looks on me. It's impossible for me to reconcile that with fat-positivity but I guess fat-positivity has its limits for me when it comes to my own body.

Anyway I can understand where they're coming from because fat people shouldn't be afraid to cosplay, but it's not like you're saying they should be and at a certain point it's really none of anyone's else's business.

I think I get you. I lose weight and work on fitness because of my dogs. I know I can be overweight and a good dog trainer but it’s besudes the point. I *want* to be a slim n fit dog trainer.

Ps good luck! Hope it all comes good for you!

Right with you, OP - I am cosplaying an Il Medico della Peste at Halloween and I think it would be odd to play a chunky version.
