Lots of people have been bringing this up: what do you think about having the secret makers put the fandom in the image itself, rather than the name-the-fandom thread? Like a note at the bottom of the image (eta: or a note in the comment itself) that says:

fandom: Dr. Who, or fandom: House, or fandom: fanfiction/fanart/rp, or fandom: Pokemon/Twilight Crossover with a Bella the Bellsprout and her sparkly vampire virgin pikachu boyfriend

I'd go into effect starting with the next subs post (so everything submitted this week is fine, don't worry). The first comment would still be there for repeats and stuff like that.

[Poll #1272473]

What if the fandom is so small, spilling it would reveal the maker's identity?
If they didn't want to name the fandom, they probably wouldn't name characters or anything, right? So if it were like "I ship this one character with this other one, but no one else does and I feel alone, but this fandom is so small everyone would know it's me // fandom: character shipping"? That could work.

Does the fandom tag have to be on the image itself?
On second thought, probably not. You could just include it in the comment you put the link in, and that would work, too!

Personally, I think it's a great idea. And it needs to be a rule, not an advisory. Kinda like "name-the-fandom" people might start out being gung-ho about it but it'll eventually die down since it's not necessary. And then we're back to square one.

When "name-the-fandom" began it worked out well, because everybody and their mother were listing all the fandoms they knew. There was rarely ever a secret that wasn't named. Now, the thread is basically only used for repeats. And whenever I ask what a fandom is only part of the time do I get a response depending upon whether someone decides to read my secret or not.

I could go through an arseload of secrets (and I have before) just to get a clue if not see if anyone else asked, but I don't always feel like weeding through 9-10 pages of secrets... which, yeah, is my problem but why should I have to put that much effort into something that can be easily solved beforehand? And I know I'm not the only one that thinks that since the 'yes' votes have double the amount of 'no' votes above.

And as for secrets being rejected, what's the big deal about that? The person can post it again the next week. And beneath the secret and fandom name technophile can put that the fandom name originally wasn't given the previous week so that people don't go crying "REPEAT SEEKRIT". Or technophile doesn't have to do that and people have to suck it up. They'll learn. Yeah, the first few weeks might be pretty bad, but if people want to see their secret actually shown in the post then they'll learn.

And as for the too small fandoms, I'm kinda torn on this on. B/c it's normally the too small fandoms that I want to know about, so I'm half tempted to just say that the probability of the secret-maker being found out is greater than normal anyways so he/she might as well suck-it-up and deal. On the other hand, this is F!S so the person has every right not to be obviously found out, and if the commenter wants to know it he/she can do the research or ask in his/her own separate post. Whatever.

Aw hell, someone just gave me a good idea.

TABS

Make a tabs list of all of the fandoms named. And then, for those who are really gung-ho about knowing the fandom, the poster is guaranteed to know it if they put in the time and effort to search with the interwebz.

B/c while the 'WTF is this?' game can be fun, it's only fun when I'm guaranteed to know what the fandom is. And the people who truly care to know what the fandom is will put the work and effort into it.

And it doesn't need to be tabs. It could be [livejournal.com profile] technophile's first post just listing all of the names. And it doesn't even need to be posted on the same day. He can post it on the next secret post day just to make certain that only people who really care will put in the effort.

Therefore, the secret maker isn't in any way compromised.

Whoops, I meant tags. Fail.

Thanks for catching that.

If you mean tags, there's a limited number of them allowed and it might not be enough. Someone else suggested listing all the fandoms at the end of the post; that would work better as there would be no limitations. They wouldn't (shouldn't?) be connected to the secret numbers; anyone wanting to know could google the answers as long as they knew the possible fandoms.

Yes, thank you, I meant tags. And I didn't know about the limited number. Good to know.

And listing all the fandoms at the end works well also. I agree.

I also agree. I like the list at the end idea. With a list, you could still do name that fandom - now you'd have a word bank!
