I remember liking Zen Cho’s Sorcerer to the Crown. (I haven’t read her second book yet.)

Oh, uh, heads up for animal/creature death near the end though. If you’re not into that kind of thing.

A lot of Diskworld comes to mind.

It's kidlit, but it does have minimal angst and death, and isn't YA romance! It's a bit "dark", but that's because it's literally in a cave city and doesn't play shy with fantasy socio-politics, for all that it's kidlit, but it's definitely not dark.

A Face Like Glass, by Frances Hardinge

"In the underground city of Caverna the world's most skilled craftsmen toil in the darkness to create delicacies beyond compare – wines that can remove memories, cheeses that can make you hallucinate and perfumes that convince you to trust the wearer, even as they slit your throat. The people of Caverna are more ordinary, but for one thing: their faces are as blank as untouched snow. Expressions must be learned, and only the famous Facesmiths can teach a person to show joy, despair or fear – at a price.

Into this dark and distrustful world comes Neverfell, a little girl with no memory of her past and a face so terrifying to those around her that she must wear a mask at all times. For Neverfell's emotions are as obvious on her face as those of the most skilled Facesmiths, though entirely genuine. And that makes her very dangerous indeed . . ."

Hrmmmmm..... There's some angst but it fits the story? It's not angst-in-a-can to make you sad?

C J Cherryh's 'Fortress' series. Very high fantasy with lots of magic (of various kinds) *and* a couple of absolutely awesome women characters.

Also 'Paladin', for high fantasy modeled after the Tang Dynasty of China. Also appropriate angst for the story, not crazy grim-dark stuff.

And, finally, the 'Rusalka' series, based on Russian folklore, set in a fantasy Russia.

Hey, a fan of the Fortress series!

(Although I was disappointed by the fifth one. In general, I lose interest in next generation stories.)

I love that series.
You know, I was not. She gave me enough build up to it, I really enjoyed it. I was only disappointed that there was so little *Tristan*!

I hate that he's all alone off in the damn woods. He just needs to be the 3 in my OT3 (Cefwyn, Ninevrise, Tristan). :D

ayrt

That's probably true, the reveal of the pregnancy and the implication of Hasufin being involved was pretty important thread iirc.

It's just when I have a protagonist I really like, time jumps and a shift to a new protagonist is a little dissatisfying. Like you said, not enough of him outside of the woods with other people. I'd always been fond of the bond Tristan and Crissand had built myself, and while I'm glad Uwen and his wife were with Tristan, he seemed otherwise kind of isolated and lonely.

Yes! He did seem very lonely, and all he wanted was to be with his friends, and that was very...sad. I don't like that sort of thing (another reason that i read fanfic - happy endings!).

I loved their bond, it was lovely. I loved all three of them being so smart and badass and kind.

I need to reread those. :D
