I cannot find books that are interesting to me at all. I have found a few, just lately, but 99 percent of them were written before 1970.
'The Expanse' novels and the newest CJ Cherryh are about it.

I *did* read and love Martha Wells' 'All Systems Red', but at 15 bucks a pop, I can't afford the others in the series (and that's on a used book site).

Fanfic, for me, satisfies my desire for interesting, non-heter stories and pairings that expand on stuff that, out in the 'pro' world tends to be annoyingly flat.

It's a pity, OP, since there is just *so much fanfic*, and you don't have to pay for something that you discover two chapters in you hate.

I'm pretty sure that there's quite a lot of queer SF&F out there these days, maybe not from mainstream pubs but definitely being written and published

Could be. But I can't afford to spend money on books that I may or may not like, and I don't have a kindle or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah fair enough!

You are not alone. I agree with all of your points.

It does make me sad, because queer sci-fi is my jam, but honestly, I find so much fic and sci-fi AUs that I'm pretty satisfied.

Right? Me, too.

If someone wanted to rec some good queer sci-fi, and i could find it on, say, Better World Books site for under 5 bucks, I'd spring for a book to see.

And then, if i liked it enough, or didn't like it, i'd offer it up to anyone here who wanted to read, and send it along. Books like to travel!

Elizabeth Lynn's "A Different Light" etc. might suit you? (They're older books, but I think they weather well.)

jsyk, you don't need the kindle hardware. Overdrive lets you borrow e-books from your library and read them on your phone or desktop computer.

If they have one that works on a PC, that's awesome. But I can't use my phone for reading - too small, and it overheats with too much use.

I have no idea of my teeny library would have Overdrive - i'll have to find out.
Ta!

They do -- it's how I read books on my PC.

I think this link should work: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Digital-Services-LLC-Download/dp/B00UB76290/ref=sr_1_1

Okay, but that's for a kindle ...software? You then have to buy the ebooks, don't you?

There are ones you'd have to pay for, yes, but other then the library there are a number of places to get free ones.

Okie dokie. :D

The renaissance of queer SFF makes me really unsatisfied with fanfic shipping the straightest of the canonically straight.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-30 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Have you tried any book apps on your phone? I recommend Oodles. It's free and has tons of books in every genre. I love it because it's all older books and there are complete series as well.

If you're looking for newer books, your library may have an app. Mine has two. There's a limit to amount of books you can borrow per month, but it's all free. All you need is a library card.

... you may not even need a library card, if you're using Overdrive.

I can't read stuff on my phone, it's way too small. Plus the battery really gets hot/power runs down fast if i'm using it a lot (even having a text conversation with my daughter, if it goes on too long, it's overheating).

Yeah, i kinda need a new phone.

I would doubt very much my library (teeny tiny) has something like that but, again - can't use my phone to read. I don't suppose those things work on a PC?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, it's app only. For PC, I'd recommend Gutenburg and Wikisource.

https://www.gutenberg.org/

You've probably heard of this site. It's got tons of old books.

You can sort by era, author, genre, and nationality. All older books, but still great. I read the entire Oz series here.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-07-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of and used them both. It's great for older stuff, yes.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
DA

if there's apps that you can't use on your phone, there are android emulators that you can use on your PC -- bluestacks and nox are two.

+1
Part of why I like fanfic so much is because it's free.

Yup. And pretty damn inventive, when compared to a lot of profic.
