I don't think it's particularly unhealthy. It's bonding. After some time you'll adapt to the bond between you and your cat and it'll all get easier.

There will probably be some rough patches as the cat ages, and in a long time enough you probably will be able to enjoy Animal Planet again!

i've had a pet die and it was literally worse than when a relative died. now, i'm not a healthy person, but in my mind it's perfectly normal to care that deeply about a pet.
my cat is my baby and personally i'm very glad to know that i will outlive her, because she wouldn't understand what happened if i died. until then she will live the best life i can offer her :)

Your cat's going to die. My cat's going to die. Everyone's pet will die someday.

Congratulations, you're an asshole.

Huge difference between knowing a pet will die (I know mine will die someday, same as I know people will die), but OP is still allowed to be emotional and upset at that prospect.

Yeah, that's pretty weird.

Grow up, OP. Death happens.

I get it, OP. I accept that my cat will die. I know it's going to happen. He's 12. I've had him for 2 years (he was my sister's cat first, but she moved & couldn't take him with her) & I love him dearly. He makes me so happy & I will be devastated when he dies.

I get it.

I was so scared when my family's cats reached 12 because that's when the ones we had when I was littler died. Now they're 16 and they keep on going!

Kitty. I have nothing productive to add. I feel you. The thought of my girl suffering makes me sick. I would do anything for her.

If you're a new pet owner, I completely get this. It's hard on the nerves, being responsible for a creature who's entirely dependent upon you for its well being and happiness. But things should settle down and so should you anxiety, sooner or later. If it doesn't, it might be time to talk to your doctor about it.

That's normal. I know plenty of pet owners, including myself, and people won't even have pets who won't watch any kind of animal documentaries. "Here's a cute little lion cub! Aaaaaand here comes its death!" isn't particularly uplifting to watch.

My family has had cats for the past 20 years and every time one has does we've mourned for them. I now have a cat who's just mine, and she's 13. She's lived by side those 13 years and yeah, when she dies I'll be devastated.
